Well said Paul. People tend to disaregard this little "difference". In Germany is quite common (albeit changing now) to have "unlimited" for GPRS but a fair use for WCDMA/HSDPA.

When you compare apples with apples, things change - a lot.

That's right - the Malaysian DiGi site that was linked by nakedmolerat is only EDGE/GPRS. DiGi don't have a 3G network. Maxis, another mobile operator in Malaysia, offers unlimited 3G data for RM120 or ~NZ$45 (NZ$1 = RM2.71). Unlike most unlimited mobile data plans in the western world, the Malaysian ones do not have terms and conditions that limits the "unlimited" usage to say 3GB etc. Celcom is another provider in Malaysia that offers unlimited 3G data for RM99 (~NZ$37) or RM120 (~ÑZ$45) without the voice component.

Interesting you point exactly this number, because this is in their Terms and Conditions:

Each customer’s total usage per month shall NOT exceed 3GB of data volume transmitted (total upload and download usage). This is to ensure that no individual hogs the bandwidth at all times.

If a customer wishes to use more than the volume permitted, a written request should be made to Maxis.

Maxis reserves the right to reject the said application or charge for any additional data volume transmitted from what is already allocated.

In respect of the customers who are in violation of this Policy, Maxis may, at its option and discretion, have their bandwidth managed, service suspended or terminated (with or without notice as Maxis considers appropriate).

Folks, wake up... There's no UNLIMITED! Please compare Apples with Apples.

i thought i will not be looking at this thread anymore, but i cant resist from replying to the discussion about 'unlimited' internet. which is off topic, i think?

firstly, country like malaysia, they have unlimited broadband for landline and yes, it is totally unlimited. u can download, host or do what ever you want without getting any trouble. speed varies from 2mbps download up to 10mbps, depending where your are (note that the website did not mention speed up to 10mbps but i was told by fellow malaysian friend that they will offer you what they have, and minimum speed is 2mbps for all over the country) . the only trouble you can get is if you download or upload porn. so, beware!

now, i gave out link for digi. true, it isnt the same apples. when i use my friend vodem - where i spend most time, i only receive 1.1mbps dl. so, it isnt great either. but digi, promise you unlimited usage and in addition to that, there are hundreds of hotspots that you can use without additional extra charge once you subscribe to its unlimited data plan. it is so common to see malaysian carrying their laptop outside their house - so many hotspot! (the link that i gave is only related to the digi customer, more hotpsot not listed there)

now, lets us check on maxis. you are right about the 3GB policy. why they have that policy? it is because malaysian customers are used to have unlimited internet, and imagine what will happen if everyone hosting torrent on maxis network. do they really charge you after 3GB? have a look at this site (post from weiquan 1989). it is there to 'scare' customers from using it excessively since they are used to use their unlimited landline broadband. current maxis unlimited data plan is RM99 ~ nz$37. it is getting cheaper since celcom is offering at a cheaper price, previously was about RM120.

now, whats the story for celcom hsdpa? i couldnt find t&c on the celcom website. i beleive it should be quite similar to maxis. but from my understanding is that these two companies do offer unlimited plan. they only trouble you can get if you start using torrent on their connection. as long as there is no p2p use, there would not be any extra charges or problem. so up to you all to think if this is really unlimited or not.

we live in nz, far away from others. even our wired broadband is also expensive. some one mention about unlimited data plan in hong kong, someone should go to ukraine and tell more about how cheap and fast their internet.

conclusion: we live in nz - scarce resources. only 4 million ppl - so not attractive for other mobile provider to come and compete. so, why not we just enjoy what we get. but we need to be aware that there are other better internet plan out thereCool. i am not a heavy user, never use more than 10GB with my telstra acc and im happy with what we currently have here.

The argument people have been putting here is summed up like "why doesn't Vodafone offer unlimited 3G while other operators in other countries do?"

Now people came to realise there's no "unlimited" 3G in other countries. There is "fair use".

So I think the whole point is moot and people should by now realise that

1.There is no "unlimited" in terms of mobile data access
2.It's not conclusive to compare New Zealand with continental countries

By the way landline broadband is not being discussed here.

I've not seen hide nor hear of this offer on the vodafone webiste - is it actually available? Phoning up two dealers gave me completely conflicting messages - one dealer said he's never heard of it and has no instructions from head office whilst the other dealer said it'd been available from the 10th of July - what gives??? Will this be promited or is it just a special GeekZone offer???

This is available now from Vodafone stores. Paul Brislen posted the press release earlier in this thread, and he sent out the official PR last week to the usual press contacts.

Just to argue....

There ARE unlimited data plans.   For example, http://www.three.com.hk/website/template?pageid=35220&lang=eng  I used it myself personally, and racked up to 30Gb a month....  No complaints there....

But no....  It really is not conclusive to compare New Zealand with a place like Hong Kong...

What I don't get is if you can buy 3GB of data for $69.96 and then an additional 3GB for $10, wouldn't it be better to market the plan as 6GB for $79.95?

Anyway, it's still a while until home users could really use this.... they need like 10GB and 20GB plans!!!

I've had a few people who live on the road ask me about the best way to get mobile braodband... i thought about vodafone 3g and then realised it would be of no use to them considering they mostly travel out in the country.

Yes this is good, but only for city people who happen to be in 3g coverage!!

Is Vodafone planning on making the entire country 3g? Or do they only want it in cities?

Will they ever get rid of the old 2.5g network or will this be around as long as the 3g network is up?

Hmmm, I don't think you are right there. Most people use small plans, such as 1GB/month. People using the big plans are exception to the rule.

For a lot of people 3GB is way more than they need and this includes people that uses the Internet for e-mail and a few website browsing and Trademe only.

Hardcore users need 10GB and 20GB, not mom and pop.

I don't. My monthly usage comes in at around 1.5Gb, although more recently it has pushed a bit closer to 2Gb so the launch of the 3Gb plan will be very welcome.
