Ever since maverick's post things have gotten a lot worse:

Relatively the same to Los Angeles, CA.

But the real problem is that to auckland now is only 604 kbps Download and 504 kbps upload!

Seriously shocking.

It seems as though this issue has been sorted, at least for me:

This is on a connection with 128k upload and is more than double the download speed I was getting last night.

The best way to solve issues of international transit for Services That Matter(tm), is to get some sort of on-net presence, just like XNet has done for Akamai. The added advantage of this should also be that the traffic becomes non-accounted as opposed to making part of your monthly capacity charge. (As an aside, it would be nice to get a view of which services (such as iTunes?) use Akamai, and will not be charged for on XNet).

If XNet can get things like:
- iTunes mirror
- Sourceforge mirror
- Linux distro mirrors
- XBox Live node
- Sony PSN node
- etc.

the quality of service for customers will greatly improve, and XNet's international bandwidth charges will be reduced.

Constantly running Speedtests probably isn't helping matters either. However, at least you're paying for the bandwidth you're using when you run them ;-)

Yep I agree, I would really like a linux mirror.

Please if atleast debian mirror! Would be great if it counted as local traffic and not towards monthly usage. Every other ISP and their dog runs a debian mirror worldwide. Virtually every ISP in Aus and orcon, ihug, citylink, transpeer (slingshot?), inspire-net, auckland university etc do in NZ.

Yeah, that's true Barf, but I think that what the above 5 posts are driving at is a wish for Local Traffic to these servers i.e. you don't have to pay for it

and money grows on trees as well...
