Yep happens all the time. The 3 - 5s over the handover 3G -> 2G is real crappy audio quality and it also causes active data sessions to stop as they can't run over 2G at the same time as voice.

:-(

But I am wondering why there is a handover! Phone is showing full-strength 3G until I make a voice call when it drops to 2G and then goes back to 3G when the call is terminated, this is stupid.
Vodafone ?

read this in explanation to handoff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handoff

From what I was told 3G network does a Hard Handoff where a 2G does a Soft handoff.  I understand this new 900mhz 3G network will solve the hard/soft handover issues of dropped calls?

Perhaps I should explain. This is not happening in a mobile situation. It is at home where phone is showing 3G all day until I make a call when it drops to 2G.
I am not moving from one cell to another so should not be experiencing hand-over.

Are you able to force your handset to 3G only and not allow it to swap to 2G or search for 2G?

You can be handed to 2G due to a change in radio conditions you dont have to be moving for this to happen and its not a fault.

the 6121 can not be locked to 3g only. Can only be locked to 2g.

I have sucessfully made calls the entire drive from home to tech on a N80 in the car on the seat with the headset. This didnt work when it was set to 2g/3g, only whe it was on 3g only so clearly the 2g network is just screwed totally. Why not turn it off totally since its as good as useless?

I can appreciate that when the signal becomes too low then you will get passed to 2G but I am getting full-strength signal all around the house so it appears odd that the transfer down to 2G only occurs when I make a voice call.

The N80 is 2100 3G, I think Peejayw is talking about 900 3G.

As the 900 3G network is not officially launched yet, they maybe still testing things. Perhaps on some cells they have voice calls switch off, and only data mode? Anyway, just a thought.

Yes, but with handdown to a 2g network not going properly on a production network then a new under test still one cant be expected to behave properly. When I was using the N80 for voicecalls (before I had a data sim for it) I had no problems at all with it set to umts only, it was just when it was on both that it had issues.

I have found that if you are prepared to sit there with dead air for up to 10 seconds that sometimes the call will come back, but more often then not I have ended and redialed before that can happen. Happened when I was on hold with the power company and it died and I was about to reach for the phone and redial and the hold music came back so I stuck on the line.

I must say its really disconcerting when you have a headset in both ears on a phonecall, it makes the other end sound like a voice inside my head!

All this excitement over 900mhz 3G is all very well....but does this mean that the roll-out of 2100mhz 3G has been abandoned, or slowed down?

The reason I ask is that I'm impatiently waiting for the cell tower on top of Otatara Hill, above Taradale, to be upgraded. I use a Vodem to circumvent the crappiest copper wire imaginable, and am restricted to GPRS speeds until the upgrade happens.

So I DO hope VF are continuing the 2100mhz 3G expansion - as someone has already indicated, Vodem isn't 900mhz compatible.

JohnR, are you able to give me any update on this, without breaking any confidentiality?

Cheers,

George

johnr: 2100mhz 3G is still been deployed!

Will this likely be rolled out to the smaller towns too? I.E. the ones that are getting 900 3G, so they have dual band 3G? This would be useful for serving people in the town centre, whilst the 900 would serve further out.

The advantage here I guess would be greater capacity (as 2100 is better here), and obviously the majority of 3G phones (currently out there) will be 2100 only for sometime yet.
