Truly funny.

I love the number of people in strange countries complaining about the lack of warranty support :)
and other people telling them they're all idiots and that Apple rocks
and the third group who seem to have a habit of dropping them.

There's even an Aussie who bought one, bricked it, bought a second bricked it, and is probably going to keep going!

It's very schadenfreude.

Great fun!

freitasm: Yep. When you can buy 1 GB for $1 at some ISPS, $12 for 3 MB is abusive.

Not really comparing apple to apples.

$12 for 3mb (there are better plans btw), is a premium for being mobile and being able to pick up your email/browse the web where ever you have coverage.

Its costs a Telco a lot more to do modile data than ISP data. especially when the Telco is having to provide data to the middle of no where, where DSL, whatever is not avaliable. Hence the cost difference. From what I make of it, the CBD data customers really funds the rural areas. Maybe Vodafone should make a charge model for Rural, CBD? Though that might be too hard on the user.

Anyway I am hijacking this thread, so I will talk about my iphone.

I have an iphone, and ended up buying the 200mb package for $30 (or whatever it is), and haven't looked back. Will be trading my iphone in for a 3G iphone when it comes out.

I'm not sure I totally agree.  That's definitely the reasoning, but doesn't Woosh use a 3G GSM network to offer their wireless broadband?

And they're selling traffic at NZ$60 for 20GB.

Even better, analyzing their fee structure, it looks like it's NZ$25 for the account, so it's NZ$35 for 20GB, which is right there at what I last heard was the international wholesale rate.  At least it's what I pay Telstra Clear per GB.  However, given that XNet is selling off-peak traffic at ~$1/GB now, the wholesale rate must have dropped. :)

Woosh use proprietary Wideband CDMA.

Doesn't change that they are selling mobile broadband, complete with a laptop card. :)  Their coverage may not be as good as desired though.

The discussion is the validity of mobile data charges - Woosh is the counter argument.  Helps that they're owned by Vodafone!

Unless, there's something special about the frequencies that they are using that results in an entirely different cost model for IP traffic from everyone else?  Something that takes their costs from NZ$60 for 1GB to NZ$60 for 20GB?  That's an order of magnitude, silver bullet territory.

No - Vodafone don't own Woosh.  They initially invested $3m during trial testing before the public launch, and turned down the opportunity to take an equity stake later on.  The majority of finance has come from U.S. based Clarity Partners.

Yup, As I said, data for mobile carriers is cheap in the CBD areas, but expensive in the rural areas. (Same as DSL really). Yet there is only one plan which covers all, which results in expensive data.

Woosh is very limited coverage, in the CBD, hence the low cost. If they covered rual areas too, then I bet they would be expensive.

I would like VF to come out with plans for CBD traffic, but it comes down to the question of, how do I know if I am on a CBD cell site or a rural cell site.

Show me where you can buy 1Gb for $1 "mobile" data....and I'll buy it...fixed line doesn't really come into it when discussing the iPhone...

Outside Vodafone HQ earlier this week. Someone x 3 is pretty happy with the announcement, Vodafone claim to have had no knowledge of it until it arrived on their doorstep :-)
