DarthKermit: Three times now I've had the land line ring and there's this weird background talking, it sounds like a recorded message but it's unintelligible. ...

Thanks, currently listening to that audio. It seems to me that caller ID isn't of much use if it's that easy to spoof the phone number the scammer is really calling from. I've never had caller ID and it seems a waste of money to get that service.

Rival telcos join forces to crack down on phone scams
Geoff Thorn from the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum is asking that, should you receive one of these calls, you should now report them to your Retail Service Provider.
I was getting 1-2 a day but haven't had one for the last week or so.
I've had two calls from 09 numbers within the last 2 hrs, with no one on the other end. I waited a while the 2nd call, and this automatic message said to me 'Goodbye'. I waited a few more seconds then hung up.
My 2nd noone-knows-this-number-except-vfsales number just got hit too
Another non standard 6-digit. So guess that means all the 7 digits have been exhausted?
Same CID range presented as prior examples. 09 525 1588
/edit sounds like it could be the embassy scam. But not in english.. which is daft

Looks like the scammers have upped the ante. They are now faking local Auckland numbers, i.e. numbers from the business that I'm working at. Multiple people have reported that they are getting calls from outside parties saying that they had missed calls or someone speaking Chinese from "this" business number.

Yeah audio company SPL was spoofed yesterday by some
I haven't really had any, until last Wednesday.
I have now being getting a spate of "one ring and hang up" missed calls on my cellphone. All appearing to be domestic from unrecognised numbers, which start with an 09 or an 07 prefix. Some at 1 or 2 in the morning, which isn't doing wonders for my sleep patterns.
I wish the telcos could do something to stop number spoofing.
Trouble is with a (very) sick relative on my hands, I can't really afford to mute my phone when I go to sleep. It might be a call in the middle of the night that sends me running to the hospital.
Someone is finally onto it. 2400 calls later
