KurstenShalfoon:
Why are your data caps so small?
The plans have been developed based on the usage of the existing iPhones (2G) that we have on our network. As you know we have a 3Gig 3G Broadband plan in the market and based on uptake and usage of our existing plans we may open this to the iPhone.

Vodafone has determined that the best way to gauge potential 3G data usage is to monitor GPRS usage patterns and then develop plans around that? That doesn't sound quite right in my books.

Me: I currently have a Sony Ericsson phone with a Motormouth voice plan and a 1Gb data plan (about $90 a month). I'm thinking about buying an iPhone outright, but would still like to use my SE on weekends, as it fit's in my pocket nicely, so I thought I'd just swap my SIM between the two. Any reason I can't do this?
VF: No, you can put your current SIM in an iPhone, but you wont be able to use and data on the iPhone.
Me: Huh? So using iPhone data is reliant on the SIM? Can I then simply get a new SIM with my current number & plans which will allow me to use iPhone data?
VF: Yes, but then you couldn't use data on your SE, only voice & text.
Me: Huh? Ok, what about this crazy idea: Can I get two SIMs for my same number, one with iPhone data capability and one with general data capability for my SE, with the ability to only use of the two phones at a time.
VF: No, not possible.
Me: Hmm, ok, worth a shot.
Me: So, you're telling me that as a customer who currently uses 500Mb to 1Gb of data a month, and I'm not even looking for an iPhone subsidy, I'll just buy one outright, you cannot offer me any way to use both handsets to their full capability on the same account?
VF: No.
scottatron: So I just spoke to a Vodafone customer service rep about my thoughts on buying an iPhone and this is what transpired:Me: I currently have a Sony Ericsson phone with a Motormouth voice plan and a 1Gb data plan (about $90 a month). VF: No.Can anyone from Vodafone clarify this for me? I just wanna buy an iPhone and use it's full capability on my current plans, but still also use my SE from time to time, also to it's full capability.I just can't understand why the iPhone is being treated like this weird mysterious creature and not a regular handset. I understand it is different in a lot of ways, but at the end of the day, it's still just a handset, with voice, text and data capabilities. Surely, my scenario should be simple enough?Scott

scottatron: Ha, I know, it does seem silly, I mean I'm not whining about the iPhone data plans or the fact that I'm not getting a $199 iPhone, I just want the option of using both handsets to their full capability and keeping my current plans, which I'm quite happy with.I'm not breaking any fixed term contracts, I'm just wanting to buy a second handset. I'm sure I could buy an Nokia N95 or any other data capable phone and do the same, so why not an iPhone.

The launch of iPhone 3G seems to be similar to what happened across the world with the 1st gen iPhone - about the only way to use it the way that YOU want to is to use unofficial software...

I had a similar conversation that went something like this:Me: Hi, I have a current Vodafone and would like to buy an iPhone as well.VF: Great!Me: Can I transfer my current number - which I use for my business, so cannot change - to the iPhone and then put a new number on my existing handset.VF: No.Me: Why not?VF: It counts as terminating your contract.Me: But I don't want to terminate my contract! I just want to move my number to a different phone and put another number on my existing handset.VF: I see what you are trying to do, but you can't.Me: Why ever not?VF: It's just set up that way.Me: So, even though I am willing to sign a second contract, so that you get more than twice as much revenue from me, you are not prepared to do this for me?VF: Nope.Me: Do you have any idea how illogical and foolish this makes you appear?VF: Is there anything else I can help you with today?Me: You haven't actually helped me with anything yet!etc!Doh!
