AT&T is a joke in the US. The fact our plans are (very marginally) better doesn't mean a great deal.

Just recapping on your questions.

Yes from the moment you purchase just like a prepay addon. No pro-ration occur since its day 1 from when you purchase it.

- Will it recur automatically in 1 month?

Yes it does.

- If I end it or change down to lower plan before the end of that month do I get pro-rated refund?

No unfortunately. The remaining amount will be wiped clean if you downgrade / upgrade before you finish your original entitlement. Definitely only do this once you have exhausted your bundles.

- Can I manage the plan from on the iPad menus as per AT&T?

As far as im aware, you can only manage it through the vodafone.co.nz/ipad portal.

- Can I monitor my usage on the device?

The portal will show you how much data remaining you have left. This is in real time.

I really wish the telco's would actually make an offering that's value for money rather than playing the premium product premium price card. Using a stranglehold business model only keeps customers untill they find a better deal and does nothing towards generating a loyal customer base.

Very true.

My brother just received his FREE iPhone 4 as an upgrade for re-signing in the UK. On an unlimited data plan (with a fair use policy but no other limit).

Like THAT will be happening here...!

To be honest I do not expect NZ to lead the way.

However I do expect us to be fair and reasonable.

Those comparing $50 nzd and $25 USD or whatever should take into account the avg wage in the USA vs the average wage here and how easy it is to pay the said USD $25 vs NZD$50.

A good example of this is that i was looking at a second hand new shape mini cooper when i was in Britain recently.
Was for sale there for like 7k which roughly translated as1NZD$18k.

I was thinking to myself how much easier it is to save 7k there than 18k here!

The force is strong with this one!

But thats purely subjective.. I personally find it a little humorous these people spending thousands on "i" devices, yet you guys cant afford the data for them?

The AT&T plans (since everyone loves to compare us to overseas..) has almost exactly the same deal .
a 250mb plan and a 2GB plan. The 250mb works out to be $21.10NZ & the 2Gb is $35NZ.

Going by this A, it seems Apple dictate the plans & prices, and B) we (you) are getting better deal than the US....

Once again if you cant afford it, dont buy it....

You cannot compare USA prices to NZ prices, income tax is cheaper, gst is way cheaper, food is cheaper, heck everything is cheaper in the USA.

Average wage in USA is $15usd, I lived on $11USD for a little over a year with no problems, average wage in NZ, is probably $15nz; try surviving on $15NZ with a family in NZ, cant do it, at least not very easily but in America you can do it.

The I-pad plans VF announced are a joke, sorry but its true; you can do better.

your argument doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

If everything is cheaper in the USA, then that means that we would expect things to be more expensive over here (if X<Y, then Y>X).
The ipad plan is not more expensive here, it is roughly equivalent.

therefore, relative to the USA, it must be quite well priced since everything else in NZ is so much more expensive.

From the day I arrived home from the US in early June with my 64GB 3G iPad, I've had an XT sim in the micro-sim tray (they're very easy to cut down).

I started with the largest data addon (240MB for $18), and within the first month, I realised it wasn't enough, so I changed to the 500MB plan for $29.95 which you have to do through a retail store. It's been fantastic since... I appear to average about 300-350MB. (semi heavy web browsing, app updates/downloads/etc, occasional youtube, twitter, etc)

When I decided to change plans, I had used approximately 200MB, and still had 2 weeks to go for that month worth of the $18 extra. Since the 500MB plan is calendar month only, I cut down my Vodafone data SIM to use in the interim (which I have since cancelled - now there's an XT sim in my Dell mini 9 too). It was ok in the centre of town (Dunedin), but at home/out of town it was pointlessly slow (no 2100MHz 3G nearby, so GPRS only).

In summary, 250MB is not quite enough if you are not always near wifi, and XT's pro-rated billing or whatever it is on prepay makes it a perfect match for an occasional use device (not to mention the 850MHz 3G). In my experience so far, it would be very difficult to use 3GB of data on an iPad.

Finally - a word of warning. There is an annoying Wifi issue with firmware 3.2 (no iOS 4 for iPad yet - due in spring) where depending on the security settings of your network, and the availability of other networks nearby, the iPad will "forget" the wifi key, and keep asking for it. For some reason I haven't had that issue for the last 1.5 weeks, but it drove me nuts sitting in the lounge trying to browse the web and having it constantly dropping from the network and prompting for the password again.

oh.. and another. DO NOT run out of credit on XT, it makes it very difficult to top up using the YourTelecom website.

Forgive me if I am wrong.. but aren't the iphones locked to at&t and they are the only carrier for the iphone?
So they can basically charge what they want?

If you know the mobile number you can dial 0800 32 32 32 from another phone and top-up that way, and still no need to speak to anyone :)

the iPhones are locked to AT&T, the iPad isn't.

however the difference is meaningless really for the majority of people since AT&T are the only carrier that sells Microsims at the moment so unless you want to get cutting on a normal SIM you are going to be forced onto AT&T's plan if you want ot use 3G data on the iPad.

As for 'charging what they want' I suspect that is a different story. Apple have enough power to force AT&T (and every other carrier around the world) to set prices as Apple see fit. If AT&T want to buy the iPhone from apple they have to submit to Apple's will, which probably includes pricing (which, I suspect, is the reaon that if you look at prices round the world for iPad data, they are usually cheaper than the same carrier's normal mobile broadband data. Data is data - a telco should be agnostic about the device really, so the only reaon I can think of that they would be cheaper for the iPad is if apple demands it)

As much as I dislike vodafone I received a free microsim with my iPad which I've decided to use till Telecom or 2 degrees release theirs as I can't be bothered cutting a sim up.

I have to say the setup was easy, pop the microsim into the iPad, turn off wifi, browse to vodafone.co.nz/ipad select the plan, enter your cc details, done.
