Yeah, that's true Barf, but I think that what the above 5 posts are driving at is a wish for Local Traffic to these servers i.e. you don't have to pay for it and money grows on trees as well...

Not just that - while speeds to ftp.nz.debian.org are good, it's also reasonably common to run into the odd 404 on that server for packages you'd expect to be there. The package index simply doesn't match up with the actual files hosted, possibly this is an error with their sync process. Because of this my preferred mirror is mirror.pacific.net.au - usually fairly fast, and it actually has all the files.

If xnet hosted a debian mirror the local traffic would definitely be a bonus, but it's not the primary reason I would like one.

adamj: I started downloading Visual Studio 2008 from MSDN at about 11am. Now (At 6.46pm) its at 39%. It is 3.3 Gigs, but even still...thats pretty slow.

As a quiet aside, I've never had decent download speeds from Microsoft regardless of provider. Which, I guess, is to be expected given the enormity of the customer base!

Just a thought... but if local traffic is free then surely any public spirited XNet customer with his own local ftp server could host content for other XNet users...

if there was enough interest in the content and was made worthwhile... I guess the downside would be once it got popular then you wouldn't want to do it anymore :/

plus I bet XNet would be on to you pretty quick for "network performance" reasons. Unlimited local... hehehehehe... yea right!

Xnet's e-mail servers (POP3/IMAP4/SMTP)
Xnet's web hosting servers
Xnet's web site / webmail / bill viewing / account info.
VFX servers
... and probably quite a few others

But I do remember seeing an Xnet staffer explicitly state that traffic from one Xnet customer to another is classed as National, rather than Local (which surprised some people at the time).

I suggest sending Maverick a PM if you want to confirm this, and yes, we had better get back on topic

Yup, the idea of an Xnet DCC hub was sadly destroyed by this revelation. IMO it should count as local, not international.

Still having issues here.

Looking forward to more bandwidth being provisioned.
And that Optus router in Australia is still messing with gaming pings during peak time.

Same here, the speeds have consistently been getting worse.

Clearly xNet do not have the bandwidth they need because when I first signed up the speeds were amazing (Janurary) and they have consistently been getting worse and worse.

That's something I've never understood.

When I (along with a few others) have been experiencing pathetic international speeds, there are still users who can get great speeds 5Mbits+ to the US when I can't even scrape 500kbps.
