Geoff Thorn from the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum is asking that, should you receive one of these calls, you should now report them to your Retail Service Provider.

I got a Chinese spam call from 09 554 5183 to my Skype virtual NZ number.

Who would I contact? Skype doesn't really care about it. :/

Presumably that advice was made for customers of member telcos.

I have been thinking about the callback scam. It should not be technically difficult to manufacture a little device that would answer the phone, wait a few seconds, then hang up (reset) if there is a disconnect at the other end. If not, the device would put the call through and alert you. A genuine caller will not usually be put off by a brief pause. They might say hello a couple times but by then the call would be put through. What do the experts here think of this idea?

As there is no way to put a device between a phone and the network that it gets signal from, it would have to be an app on the phone. Apple are crazy about not letting things have access to call data and their recently added way that blocking apps work is somewhat absurd so would be limited to android only. There are already plenty of apps on android to deal with calls. I use truecaller which is pretty good at knocking out spam calls.

Telcos need to get their crap together with faked caller ID. Email mostly sorted it with SPF and domainkeys, but phones have nothing.

2. Carrier verifying authenticity of call at 04:55 thanks to STIR/SHAKEN. (The solution: the STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) and SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) standards. The idea: make it so every phone has a certificate of authenticity attached to it — a kind of digital signature — that allows you to once again trust your caller ID)
3. Options for the consumer at 06:25 (NumberRobo, Hiya)

I have not used any of these services and can't vouch for their effectiveness.

We don't have caller ID. We've had four (I think) phone calls from scammers claiming to be from Windows support or Spark (Spark isn't even our frickin' ISP) in the last few months. At least they haven't phoned in the middle of the night.

A device that is being trialled by the Commission for Financial Capability appears to be helping combat these calls.

"... the couple trialled a call-blocking unit that has won British Government backing and their daily unwanted calls stopped immediately. Now, they're backing plans by the Commission for Financial Capability for a three-month national trial of 25 units."

Commission for Financial Capability fraud education manager Bronwyn Groot was put in touch with the couple via Victim Support and Age Concern.

"I thought: 'There's got to be something I can do'," Groot said. "To see them so stressed and so worried."

Groot personally bought three trueCall devices from Britain and gave one of the call-blocking units to the Dyers to trial.

The nuisance calls stopped immediately, much to the relief of the Dyers who initially thought the callers might have just moved on to other numbers. They hadn't. Hundreds of calls to the Dyers' number from all over the world including Turkey, Japan and Tunisia had been blocked during the two-month trial..."

Looks like the device they are using is from Truecall

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

I don't understand the telephone system, but these calls must be originating from a few specific places.
Why isn't the world telling the originating telcos to put an end to it or be blocked?

Or is this all from hacked SIP accounts/devices?

Same reason clicking unsubscribe on email is a bad idea. Confirming a target means more chance one of the methods will be accepted by said target so try as many as possible.

I've successfully had a few of these callers blocked through the online chat option https://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/chat/chat-ninja/ here.

Simply state that you received a spam/scam call, provide your first + last name, your mobile number, the offending caller and the time. Job done.

First time I did this, "Ambrose" suggested I use this rather dodgy app:

Ambrose: I have raise successfully investigation request for this number and also block this number as well.
