StarBlazer:

If you are interested, PM me and I will give you the name and phone number of Sky telesales - He's not sure how long he can keep the deal open (yeah, right!).

Thanks StarBlazer just got off the phone with your guy and he has set me up to be installed on Thursday. With a deal I couldn't find anywhere else, not even when I asked a Sky supervisor for it.

I got MySky HDi installed on Saturday through the same deal as StarBlazer. The installer said that most of his recent installs have all been TCL customers switching to Sky.

You're welcome

The HDi box and built in PVR concept rocks - even my wife thinks it's great!  Having HD signal is great - bye bye grain and RF interference.

I think the interface to the TCL box is better - quite graphical - not sure I would go as far as "sexy" but certainly slick.  The drive on the Sky box seems like it could get used up quite quickly - recorded the FA Cup final - 217 minutes in HD and it used up 14% - would be useful if you could decide whether to record in HD or SD - I mean who needs the news or Target in HD?

Honestly I would have preferred to stay with TCL - but what is done, is done!  Let's see what they offer in a years time to entice people back!

To do that would mean having duplicate channels in the EPG with SD and HD versions. That would create plenty of confusion for many people.

The real issue is one of small HDD capacity - 160GB of available space on MySkyHDi really is a bad joke. I have 2TB just for TV storage on my PVR. With HD programming on Freeview|HD using up to 5.5GB per hour it doesn't actually take long to fill it up!

In the UK they had regional broadcasts of the BBC and ITV.  What Sky did to get around it was your local region would be on channel 1 for BBC and 3 for ITV - they would then put all the other regions in the 900 range - so even if you lived in Manchester you could still watch BBC Wales or vice versa.

I suspect Sky NZ would still be transmitting TV1 etc on SD for those who do not have a decoder that can cope with HD - surely it wouldn't be a big job for them to include it on their EPG in some out of the way channel list.

In respect to the HDD - TCL are only putting in a 300GB drive - you would think that the price of drives to put a 500GB or 1TB wouldn't add that much on the manufacturing cost of the box.  Considering that most of what I record is now going to be HD my calculation (based on 217 mins = 14%) is that I have about 25 hours of HD recording capacity!

I suppose when you compare it to the old tapes, that's like having nearly 9 VHS tapes just for throwaway TV!  Heck I'm showing my age now.

Can a moderator confirm what the rules are for publishing names and numbers - There's quite an interest in the Sky deal but you have to speak to a specific guy at Sky telesales.

Happy to share!

That's interesting about the 900 range as that's exactly the channel range that the HD channels are on with the TCL box.

You can share in private if someone asks. The problem posting in public is that in six months time this person will still be getting phone calls...

So make it clear - "if someone wants [this deal] then send me a PM".

Thanks for clearing that up - I will continue to pass on the details in a PM.

I wonder if TCL will customise the EPG to make TV1 HD channel 1 if the subscriber is on the HD ticket!  If not that could be a bit of a pain having to remember to go to 901.

As TCL already have split and shown the SD/HD channels it may allow you to choose which one to record from!

And thanks very much for doing that Starblazer.  I've given up on the lack of a definite go date from TCL and opted for MySkyHDI.  Having promised my son wall to wall football for the FIFA World Cup I could not wait any longer.  Instal booked for next Monday.

ha ha - I'm sure he is!

Just out of interest, how many of those who have gone to Sky would have been on the "initial interest" list for TCL?

TCL should see the impact of their inaction and poor customer service!

I had all my plans of going to Xnet & Then Sky just to realise that they can't install it here unless apparently I have a telecom line? I thought Naked DSL was the whole point of not needing a phone.. Ahh well. I guess i'll wait for TCL. They are supposed to be announcing the release date of the Beta Phase on Thursday (Two weeks from their first post). Although I should not get my hopes up, I'm pretty sure Telstra have given me a timeframe before..?

Sky tell you that you need a phoneline for service. This is incorrefct and there is no such requirement. If you want to watch PPV movies you'll simply need to book it by phone rather than from your remote.

Sky need to wake up and realise it's 2010, smell the roses, and finally get it into their heads that their reliance on dialup modems for backhaul is history.

Sorry sbiddle, I should've made myself clearer. Xnet wouldn't provide an internet service here without a Telecom Phone Line. Pretty disappointing as I thought Naked DSL was the reason you didn't need a phone line.  Oh well. I could stay with Telstra Internet I guess.. too many choices..
