Spong: SMS problems don't affect everyone. I ported my 021 to 2Degrees ages ago and haven't had any problems sending or receiving txts to and from any country yet.

+1

I had some initial problems in 2009, but they got it sorted pretty quickly.  2D's website has a good page which deals with this issue:

http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/prepay/pricing/calling-and-texting-overseas

According to that listing 2degrees doesn't have a texting agreement with Vodafone UK (but they do with Orange, O2, T-Mobile).  If you can't text Vodafone UK users then that would rule 2degrees out for me straight away, no matter how good their prices are.

DaveB: Well done VF.

Have just read this thread as I too was going to change our Business Smart 45 to 2 Degrees. Took your advice, rang VF (call answered almost immediately) and asked to be transferred to the Customer Retention Department.

Transferred immediately and spoke to a wonderful woman who reinstated an extra 1gig on both phones and doubled the minutes to 200 mins. It was agreed that this will stay like this for as long as I stayed on the plan. She also suggested I could save $5 per month by going onto a twelve month contract which I accepted as this will more than take care of our needs for the next twelve months, regardless of what might come out in the interim.

Again, well done VF not only for matching 2Degrees, but more importantly for taking care of my call in a quick and professional manner.

Hmm that seems like a good deal with the 200mins and 1GB extra, I was going to switch my biz phone to 2degrees in the next couple of days so I may have to talk to VF and see what they will do.

Make sure you ask to speak to the retention team

Spoke with retention team and we're only worth 1GB and 100mins ;-( so definitely better off with 2degrees :-)

Considering 2degrees do the data share option and carry over minutes I think they are the better option for us.

Cheers

Ha yeah I could call them back but I think I'll be happy with 2degrees, It's not as if I've been with Vodafone for long (  only from 1999 to... well 5 minutes ago :-)  )

do you think it'll work if I call and ask for the customer retention team even if I was only on prepay? been with them for 10 years now spending at least $30 a month, gave customer service a call today had no luck but didn't know to ask for the customer retention team.

Elpie: That's really nice for you - well done!

We had two accounts on that plan and had the 1Gb data expiring on 20th June. When I called Vodafone the answer was an unequivocal NO with nothing being offered to keep us. So, two accounts moved to 2Degrees. Due to SMS issues, I regret the move but Vodafone wasn't interested in keeping me so be it.

Well, after posting this I had a chat to a certain VF person here on Geekzone. After being on 2Degrees for two months I am very happily back on Vodafone.

Vodafone did a deal, which isn't quite as good as what 2Degrees are offering, but its certainly good enough to get two accounts back. Good enough that we signed on a 12-month contract.

The clincher is that Vodafone service is reliable. Our experience with 2Degrees was fraught with problems - some caused by porting our numbers (which I don't recommend doing) but most caused by frequent moves between 2D and roaming on Vodafone. Each time the service switched there were problems with connectivity. No doubt these will be remedied in time but given that we wouldn't have moved from Vodafone if they had encouraged us to stay, getting a bit of encouragement now made the switch back a no-brainer.

I would like to thank that certain person-who-hangs-out-here-and-helps-people-out (you know who he is). Thanks J. Vodafone now has two happy campers back in the fold.

Yes, definitely call and make sure you get to speak to someone on the customer retention team. You have nothing to lose by asking.

OK, been using this plan for just under a month. My only problem is that now its a few days to go until it renews. I am nearly out of data.

There does not seem to be a way to get that quick 100Mb data topup anymore. Previously I was able to buy an extra 100MB for $10.

All the Prepay smart plans seem to come with 300MB data, so updating won't help either. Not sure why they called prepay smart if the higher level plans dont offer more data, only more TXT's and minutes. I'm sure most smartphone users would be more interested in data.

Just finished reading through all the posts.. everyone's experience with their telco is of course different on its own.

As for me, i was a vodafone customer since my 1st day in nz more than 5yrs ago.. faced a few issues with my reception at my new place (which was my fault for not checking cell reception before moving)
Talked with vodafone about terminating my plan and they did get back to me.. i guess it was the retention team.. but they didnt offer me anything except ask me why i wanted to teminate and said try if their networking team can fix the problem or else they cannot help.

they couldnt help out and the galaxy s3 deals became a hot topic in the 2degrees section and after getting convinced enough.. i got that deal and so I am on 2degrees now..

few things i would like to re-iterate though (which have been mentioned by few members earlier)
- its good to be able to make more than a few calls with a phone now
- customers should not have to call and black mail their telco to get a good deal..
- good deals should be provided to the customers right from the start

I feel you've hit the nail on the head. Having been on a plan with Vodafone for 13+ years, and never feeling I was getting good value, and only being offered something reasonable once I'd left for 2Degrees you have to wonder how much they really appreciate you as a customer.

Since joining 2Degrees, I've regularly experienced more and better value for my money, without even asking for it - a complete culture change, and I love it. Some examples have been data sharing with multiple devices, rollover minutes, an additional year of 1GB bonus data over the year I expected.

I have clients that pay a small fortune to VF for their business, and when they need something like more data they constantly come up against a brick wall. I've lost count of how many times I've had to direct them to "The Retention Team". It's only apathy that prevents them moving to 2D or Telecom.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

If it was not for these new plans from Vodafone, there would not be the new Telecom or 2degrees plans.

I'm going to stick with Vodafone for now. 2Degrees does not have good coverage, And the Telecom plan is only for a short period.

My ideal plan however would probably be a $19 plan concisting of:

- 1GB Data
- 30 Minutes calls
- 300 Texts.

Have a look at the discussion going about the new 2degrees plans:
