TimA:
NotReally: Not sure if anyone has had this problem with an HG659 modem/router.

I tried plugging a USB hard drive into the HG659 and configuring via the web interface. It seemed to be easy but then the HG659 restarted, and then restarted again, and then restarted again.

I pulled the USB hard drive and all was good. The hard drive is fine when connected to a PC and was working with the previous Orcon Genius modem/router. I haven't bothered plugging it back in for 2 weeks as I want the DLM to try and get more speed from the VDSL connection.

Any suggestions?

Its the disk, Is it powered over USB?
i'm having the same issue with my one when plugging in my 2.5inch 2Tb wd hardrive. It's powered by USB and works fine elsewhere. When unplug it in my internet connection drops and I also can't enable samba or FTP in the config screen. Is it a firmware issue?

Hi Tim,

Its a Seagate 1.5TB with an external power supply, so not USB powered. I was wondering if the formatting was causing problems (NTFS) but didn't want to reformat to ExFAT without knowing it would fix the problem.

Cheers.

Has anyone else tried plugging a Linksys PAP2 into the hg659? When I do, it can't see the 2Talk SIP servers, but it works 100% fine when I plug it into a gig switch that plugs into Eth1 on the hg659. Weird?

Hairy1 got it going by manually applying google DNS i think.

Yep. In the ATA manually specify the DNS servers. Use any you like including Vodafone ones. As soon as I did this it sprung into life.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I managed to get PAP2 going plugged into hg659 by powering down the switch it was plugged into previously. Not entirely certain how this would affect it, but perhaps it has a long memory when it comes to ARP addresses. It seems to only attempt a new path when the old switch has gone completely. Did the same when I uplugged another device from th sw and plugged that into the hg659. Unusual behaviour?

Not sure if it has already been mentioned in this thread but you can find out more info about your connection via SSH than the web interface gives.

Details here: http://www.neatstuff.co.nz/HG659.html

Allowed me to confirm that as of this morning my profile has changed to 17a, yussss!

TimA: That will be over WiFi, For some reason over WiFi with VDSL it never gets higher than 22Mbp/s download. I have tried multiple devices and AP's and modems. Just the translation from WiFi over to a DSL signal isn't the fastest.

I just got this over wifi with a ~5 year old Vista laptop :-)

Mine says I am on Profile 8b. Is that bad? (using command 'xdslcmd info --stats')

an 8b profile isnt bad, 17a profiles are simply given to shorter lines that meet a given set of parameters

8b lines on average will top out at 50/10 where as 17a lines ramp to the DSLAM max of 70/10

Interesting (and annoying) that the HG659 displayed upstream and downstream line attenuation on ADSL but shows "0" for both on VDSL.

seems to be a common "feature" among many vdsl modem/routers.

Hi guys,

I've got some problems with upstreem rate of my HG659.

first of all the exchanger is located about 1.9 km away from the router.

When it was first plugged in a had speeds about 18Mbp/s download and 2.0 upload, after about 10 days DLM dropped the speeds a bit, eventinally I left with 17Mbp/s download and 1.5 (even 1.3 sometimes) upload.

So here is the statistic of the router (this one is the latest as i asked to restart active DLM today)
DSL Information

DSL synchronization status:
Up
Connection status:
Showtime
Upstream line rate (kbit/s):
2054
Downstream line rate (kbit/s):
19199
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s):
1872
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s):
20772
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB):
11.4
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB):
12.5
Upstream interleave depth:
0
Downstream interleave depth:
0
Line standard:
VDSL
Upstream line attenuation (dB):
0
Downstream line attenuation (dB):
0
Upstream output power (dBmV):
7.6
Downstream output power (dBmV):
18.6
Downstream interleave depth:
None
DSL up time:

This one i found on vodafone website.

DSL synchronization status: Up
Connection status: Showtime
Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 6260
Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 19088
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s): 6431
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s): 18524
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 12
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 11.6
Upstream interleave depth: 0
Downstream interleave depth: 0
Line standard: VDSL
Upstream line attenuation (dB): 0
Downstream line attenuation (dB): 0
Upstream output power (dBmV): 8.3
Downstream output power (dBmV): 18.5
Downstream interleave depth: None
DSL up time: 0 days 9 hours 40 minutes 55 seconds

How is it possible with pretty much the same levels of noise of the line to get such relatively fast upstream? Is there a way i can improve the speed, i wish to image Upstream at least a bit faster.

Please advise and thank you.

Maybe you should roll this back. You shouldn't have been given VDSL looking at those stats.

think you mean shouldnt ;)

but yep, your clearly very borderline (and over the ledge!).. and you simply wont be getting any better (assuming your line was installed correctly)
