I also have opted for MySky HDI in time for the FIFA World Cup and had it installed on Tueday. It's great and thanks again Starblazer for the help in getting a great deal.

Not that I'll probably ever do it, but with my existing Homecast Frreview PVR still hooked up to the aerial and TV, I believe I can now watch one programme while recording four others.

Out of an interest while passing, I dropped into the TCL showroom on Sunday to have a look at their new PVR. It wasn't available for viewing as it was away being "upgraded". A bit embarrassing for them really.

I have not yet made the jump to Sky as the update from Telstra was targetted at "mid to late May". I guess, due to only being 4 days left in May and the World Cup 14 days away, it is time to make that change!

Why won't they just front up and say

a) It's not going to be ready for WC ko
b) Even if it is ready - we can't guarantee to have it installed in time for WC ko

I haven't made the jump yet to MySkyHDi - but I'm teetering on the brink

We're now T+18months from it's first mooted launch date for goodness sake

I moved to MySky HDi a couple of weeks back and I'm so glad I finally did it. When I spoke to TCL about cancelling my account they asked why and I told them it was because I wanted an HD PVR for the World Cup. She fully understood my reason for leaving as they didn't have the impression it would be ready in time either.

Another issue is the cost

I've got a triple play package from TCL from when they dropped the ridiculous $400 installation fee 3 years ago.

I'm currently paying $81.88 for Digital Television (basic+sky sports & movies package)
I also get a $13.44 triple play discount on my internet package.

The average monthly cost (over 6 months) of Starblazers deal MySkyHDi rental+HD ticket+installation+sports & movies over the 6 months comes out at $122 p/m

Ouch!

I suppose it's a call on how much I am willing to pay for HD, and watching the WC games when I want in HD!

It's a main consideration of mine of hanging in there to see what the comparative costs will be once TCL announce their pricing.

With the deal Sky were offering, you got 6 months half price sport and movies and didn't need to pay for HDi or the HD ticket. Consider also that moving to TCL HD has a $99 installation plus $10 HD and $15 box rental - so that alone your TCL TV would go up to $106.88.

In the long run, Sky is probably not cheaper - it never has been - but it is available now and it works. At the end of the 12 months, go back to TCL - you keep the dish and the wiring which would have cost you $300 at least - you'll be needing freeview boxes for your old TV's in a couple of years anyway!

EDIT: the Sky deal may still be available - I'll PM the contact if you want!

I find it ironic that Telstra have their store in the CBD, advertise on billboards in the CBD, but you can't actually USE these in the CBD (where I live). What up with that?

Good question! So how are TCL getting cable in their Wellington store? Or is it just certain areas that they can't supply?

The whole CBD is a blackspot. I live just a stones throw from the store yet I can't access their cable service. Poor form, TelstraClear.

Good question! So how are TCL getting cable in their Wellington store? Or is it just certain areas that they can't supply?

Those living in apartments will find the issue is the amount of money TC want to install cable in the building.

I heard last night they want $4,000 for one building just to get cable into the Comms room. Presumably they would want more to distribute it within the building.

I would try and get another opinion if you can.

At my last house a company I did work for wanted Telstra in my workshop at the end of the house
approx 40M from the boundary.
After 4 or 5 visits they quoted said Co $1800 to run it under the length of the driveway.
I got the thruster run to the house (approx 5m from the boundary ,which is free) and ran the cable myself
under the house ;-)

A south african dude came over and took my old decoder away today. He seemed to think that Telstra's first home install went out in wellington today. Anybody know of this?

I have not heard that any sets have been installed. When TelstraClear launched the Home Media page they asked people to register to get updates and notifications of when deployment would start. I registered but there have not been any updates yet.

The web site did change from "announcements in mid-late May" to "announcements soon" (note soon is a subjective term with TelstraClear) over the weekend so I am guessing there are still plenty of problems to sift through.

I would imagine one of the problems is that a number of people have moved to Sky.

I noticed they have also removed the PVR unit they had on display in the window cabinet on Courtenay Place.

Maybe they don't have any spare engineers to do installs, as they're all busy picking up equipment from people who have moved to Sky!
