Is there an upgrade occurring on a node that connects Petone cable users? We've been without internet for more than 15 mins, done two reboots of the modem but it just flashes on the download light.

What Dylan and JohnR's optimism seems to suggest to me is that somehow Vodafone are waiting on all the nodes to be upgraded before they turn their attention to un-borking something centrally where our latency and host resolution issues are stemming from? I'm not a network specialist, but I can see how this might be the case. Are there other ducks that need to get into line before congestion clears up? Maybe.

However, neither JohnR or Dylan [Hi guys!] are talking this way, and they may not have this information. I'm not running any traceRoutes or tests other than the Vodafone speed test to Wellington but my experience from our upgraded node in Island Bay reflects the same evening performance dips and crazy fluctuations.

It'd no doubt help the situation to get some clarification from Vodafone about the different stages involved in this upgrade work, and not just regional node upgrades and cutovers.

What he said, would be nice to see the end game after the nodes are upgraded. Is that it or will there be follow up programs to optimise further as my node has been upgraded but I can get 10Mbps one minute and 50-60 the next

Nish: Thanks for that John and I understand that. Do you have any info around what else is left to do apart from nodes that are yet to get cut over?

Oh and if its of any use, I am on the 130/10 plan.

Few Nodes and some optimisation and balancing work as I understand

So would it be reasonable for a user on a 130Mb/s plan on node w40 to achieve 65Mb/s at 9PM after this work is complete?

I am not going to quote figures but close to plan speed

Thanks John, close to plan speed is worth sitting tight for for a few more weeks.

I had planned to throw the toys out of the cot on the 1st if it wasn't fixed, but now I'm hitting 10Mb/s at 9pm (up from ~2Mb/s) there is obviously some truth to this article.

Update: we get to the upload light, which flashes (download is green, not flashing). Then it will go back to download flashing again. Over an hour now.

I've been wondering that myself and have asked a couple of times. All I've heard is that some load balancing and tuning may still be required. I'm willing to wait until the nodes are all upgraded, but not any longer.

I'm assuming you're on the same node as me and while it's been better on and off, it's still terrible and often unusable during peak.

You're on W10, and that's being cut over today (edit - seems it's right now, which would make sense). Will hopefully be back up soon.

Here are the TrueNet cable latency stats for the week ending yesterday:

Wellington:

Sydney:

Melbourne:

... and this was my Island Bay connection last night:

EDIT  (My normal ping is 8ms)

Those numbers line up with what my flatmates and I were seeing last night. Decent (even good!) bandwidth, but high latency. It sounds like there may have been a country-wide issue for international latency, though. My flatmates mentioned that most (all?) of their friends in other parts of the country running on different connection types were also seeing similarly high latency to Sydney.

Things are looking good so far this afternoon, though. Latency's overall quite consistent, and my lowest speed test of the day is still in excess of 125 Mbps down. It's even better/more consistent than yesterday, so again, things are at least moving in the right direction. :)

I'm really curious how it will hold up this evening. We had some dips last night, but overall non-gaming Internet use remained generally usable and responsive.

Not bad pings but speed is not 130 yet...

There is other work happening as well, lots of load balancing etc. I expect it will switch over to be more routine network maintenance soon.

Some of our engineers have been following this thread closely and then messaging me asking for details about specific connections. They're looking into an issue that might be affecting Sideface who is in Island Bay and potentially a couple of others too.

That would be me and one or two others here, all on the same node as Sideface, all with the same issues. Glad you're on it!
