Island Bay
100/10Mbps cable connection.

The honeymoon is over.  frown

For 24 wonderful hours on Friday I had perfect 100/10Mbps speeds and normal pings for Wellington. Auckland, Sydney, & Melbourne.  Bliss!

Today - before 6pm - speeds are already way down and latency is way up (again).

Latency for Sydney and Melbourne is over 200ms.  Speeds are in the 30s to 80s.  (tested wired to modem)

Sigh. So I missed the only good weekend of speed in the last 6 months.

Still okay here in Petone.

Tried simultaneous 2 x Twitch streams at source quality and a 4k Youtube video, all ticked along nicely for a few minutes.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Still not perfect here either.

Granted, the situation is still significantly better than what it was last week, but there are still incredibly apparent signs of congestion. To say that the congestion is resolved would be incredibly misleading. Dropping to less than 50% of advertised speeds is not my idea of a healthy connection. And what's to happen when/if the cable network continues to see rapid growth? It seems like the node upgrades may have been more of a temporary stopgap than anything else, unless Vodafone still has further work to complete.

We started seeing these "minor" dips late last year/early this year, and before long it had compounded into the consistent, frustrating experience that spurred many of us to take our complaints to this thread. Last year, Vodafone's cable connections were able to handle the full 130/10 Mbps with near-perfect reliability. It seems like they have been unable to sustain their network with their rapid subscriber growth.

At this point, the HFC network is beginning to feel more like something that people just put up with until fibre finally rolls out in their area. It's quite a shame, since with proper investment the technology should theoretically be able to meet (and even heartily beat) the fibre plans that are currently offered.

I dunno. I just have the vibe that Vodafone isn't interested in competing. It seems like they want to make as much money as they can off of cable plans, but with as little investment as possible. Sure, at the end of the day, that's what a business does, but it seems like there's just so much wasted potential. Virtually everyone that I know that's using cable is doing so because it's generally better than the (A/V)DSL that's available, but they all plan to jump ship right the moment fibre rolls out in their region.

Sadly, I have to count myself among those many people currently. The cable network just has too many issues, and I'd be gone in a heartbeat if I had a better option.

I just really wish I could see the cable network as competition for fibre, instead of "the only option" for people still waiting for fibre.

10pm and latency keeps rising ...

It takes 30-60 seconds before the speed test will even start.

This is the highest ping that I have ever had (was 9ms this morning)

EDIT: Spoke too soon - ping now 563ms at 10:20pm  (tested hardwired to modem) frown

Latency issues persist on Wellington cable.

Last night, 10:20pm:

TrueNet Wellington cable latency stats for this week:

This morning:

(Speeds OK, but my ping is normally 9ms)

EDIT:  Island Bay, 100/10Mbps cable, measured hardwired to modem

Just a question: where does Hataitai fit in all of this? I've never seen a Hataitai listing during the upgrade process. Does it belong to a different nomenclature of cabinet locations? Or was it not a part of the upgrade?

Doesn't seem like peak time yet... I haven't really had problems with pings, more speed.
