Just a note about our VDSL connection using the HG659, since it went in we've been stuck with Wifi that didn't seem to like going above 20mb.
Discovered last night by total fluke our TV must be putting out a heap of RF Noise that drowns out all bands, when switched off I managed to do a speedtest over wifi that hit 40mb (using Wireless AC over 5ghz).

So now I need to relocate the router a bit further from the TV which should help the speed, its sitting about 20cm from it currently.

Some time last night my modem dropped vdsl and reconnected, today my pings are down to 6/7ms from high 30'2 previously. Still on profile 8b. Can anyone explain why off the top of their head?
At the same time my max download has dropped a wee bit from mid 16mbps to mid 15.

scottjpalmer: Not sure if it has already been mentioned in this thread but you can find out more info about your connection via SSH than the web interface gives.

Details here: http://www.neatstuff.co.nz/HG659.html

Allowed me to confirm that as of this morning my profile has changed to 17a, yussss!

Just tried this on mine, password dosent work :(

Obviously V/fone dont like us looking at stuff so theyve changed it for new customers.... curses.

UPDATE : Meh, dunno why, but my TV session missing characters... got it :)

I'm on 8b at the moment.... was installed 22/4
Getting 40/10 - max is 43/15

that max is attainable not maximum. you wont ever get more than 10 up.

at 22/4 starting out, thats a great improvement to 40/10. and would expect your line to be 8b at 40/10.

ah! in that case, see what DLM does.

what was your adsl attenuation? (pretty sure that modems firmware still doesnt report attenuation for vdsl unfortunately..)

I also cant mount a >1Tb drive on the 659. A 1TB mounts fine  a 3Tb does not.

The same NTFS drive mounted on the TV works fine and on my computer.  I think this device has a defect and that is why you are seeing it restart.

The HomeHub can mount up to 2TB, hence why 1TB works OK but 3TB won't.

Yup we came across that the other day. As Mike says it doesnt support it. Also a firmware upgrade on it might solve. But anything more than 1 TB over a USB on a modem is going to be marginal if not none at all.

Had a problem with the HG569 only supplying 0.65A on the USB port as well. Plugging in a 1TB drive caused it to restart repeatedly (even though the drive had an external power supply). Same hard drive is 100% stable connected to a server.

USB 2.0 is rated at 0.5A meaning this is above specification.

Also I would suggest running anything drawing its power directly by USB over an expectedly low power device is not the best of ideas.

Thanks Lucky015.

I'd raised it as an issue shortly after I got VDSL installed back in Feb and that was the answer given by a Vodafone rep. It is a WD Elements Desktop external hard drive with an external power supply. Website says its USB2 compliant so that should mean less than 0.5A? Either way it was crashing the modem but worked flawlessly on a server (and any other PC I plugged it into) so does that mean it is the modem at fault?

Not worried now as I've got a working solution but was interested to see someone else had a similar problem.

Cheers.
