Got a friend staying in a student block on wakefield st, the internet there is appalling. Its fed to every room from a central gateway by the looks of things. Connection is via RJ45 ports in wall or wifi, (if the wifi signal is even present, it wasn't when I checked) One port did not even register a link to the switch, the other port on opposite side of wall in adjacent bedroom managed to register a link and get DHCP but was extremely slow to load any webpages, sometimes not at all. Is woosh wireless a viable option here? Skype will be the main data consumer. I had a look for decent hotspots in the area with realistic pricing and there's none, they all want > $50 for a measly 5 or 10gig.

IIRC Woosh Wireless is pretty horrible, and their Facebook page makes me cringe. Mobile broadband or one of the many Telecom WiFi hotspots?

Your description (slow and unreliable) pretty much matches my experience (albeit a couple years ago) with Woosh.

I am 99.999% sure they transmit from the sky tower, so either the signal could be really really bad because you are directly under the signal beam, or really good because you are so close to the transmitters.

Anyhow they have a 40gb plan that looks good.

Yes I think woosh will be the better option for now, even if it is just 1mbit, its still faster and more reliable than the poor level of service already provided by the building managers. If adsl was possible, the speeds so I have been told would be excellent but there is no copper going to any of the rooms in this block, only to the main office downstairs I assume which then feeds all the rooms via cable/wifi through a central gateway.
