I have joined geekzone for advice and information about data connections for VoiP Pbx.

To maverick,
i am looking at 3bits epygi system(www.3bit.co.nz), thanks to a post of yours that i found a few weeks ago.
it is for our company's pbx solution.
everything looks fine, except the data connection.
i assume you are involved with worldxchange and also 3bit,
i will use epygi with 3bit and worldxchange, this is pretty much decided.
i need to make an informed decision about the connection, UNS is too
expensive, DSL is 'best effort', every one i know says wireless has
latency issues.

i have just read your post about wired country occasionally dropping out and several 3hr long problems. This is obviously of concern to me, so can anyone ease my mind or have a reliable solution, our budget is probably around $150 p/m for data to ensure the economic feasibility of VoiP within our business. (approx 12 phones, with 4-5 Voip lines and 2 backup)

I assume you have inquired about UNS pricing already however if you seriously looking at the UNS route then you should probably price this up only for VoIP access and use DSL or wireless for best efforts Internet service.

From memory when I did the figures it became more cost effective to use UNS at about 8 lines within Auckland on a group C exchange. More than 8 lines and the savings racked up pretty quick. This excludes any other cost savings or expenditure incurred by your VoIP deployment, purely a line rental comparison.

Wired Country wireless offers QoS tagging for voice traffic to ensure a CIR and other network metrics are VoIP friendly - this is only put into effect if you are using Wired Country partners (such as Ihug) or Compass for VoIP services however.

Wireless is not without its problems, much like any other access method. If those are managed effectively however they should be minimized to a level where wireless access is suitable for most business and consumer connection requirements today.

The latency issues you are probably referring to are probably more based on people experiences with Woosh, which uses a quite different technology to what is in use on the Wired Country network. If you look at the equipment specs for the Wired Country kit you will see the modulation scheme is 802.16-2004 (also known as WiMax, although it is not vendor inter operable so cannot be called WiMax technically)

If it helps, I was with Wired Country for the last 4 or 5 years and experienced a rock solid product (at most 1 outage and even then nothing major per year.) In the past 6-8 months it was down for hours at a time on a handful of occassions, this could have been Ihug's fault I admit. Latency was awesome though, far better than I'm now getting on ADSL.

firstly Fraktful, if the QoS is only valid with Compasses VoiP then that may render it pointless, though the epygi has a built in router with Qos inbuilt- as i understand. would this mean I wouldn't have to worry about QoS through the data supply?

second, scottjpalmer, may i ask why you changed back to adsl? and also i am assuming your connection was at home with one comp, and usage in mornings and evenings. Ours will be a business application with data and voice use through business hours, is there anyone who has experience with this?

also, we have confirmed line of sight. im not too sure if distance is a factor, and if this has an effect on latency, loss etc
(im sure our line of sight is marginal)

This is just a quick check in as I am out of the country for a few weeks

, 3Bit are a completly seperate comapny who have a dealer arrangement with us we have quite a few good dealers that we work with out there as well, One of the good things about 3Bit is that they actively contribute here on the forums as well, so thats why you would have seen them commented on here, and can they provide a very good install and support service.

If you talk to the 3Bits guys or any other dealer there will be a service that is now on VFX that can be added to the Quadro / SPA9000 main trunk number called "call forward unreachable" this will allow automatic failover to your backup PSTN line the option will be called "DVX Failover and is just being added now to the commercial DVX offerings" it will auto switch back when the circuits come back on line, so this should help with any concerns about dropping of the connection

This option can also be added to each DDI as well

Cost will be I think $20 for the main trunk and not sure what is is for the DDI's as it will be part of an advanced feature pack for each DDI, I think 9 to 12 $

The QoS most people refer to when implemented on end user devices works by queuing data according to its user defined priority, also perhaps intelligently looking at particular data service flows and throttling these to try manage flows of data(RED etc). This only works if the remote end responds to this throttling, eg the network or application layer must be aware of this and respond appropriately.

Drawbacks of this are numerous, for example if you have only VoIP traffic being sent on your UBS connection and no other traffic then this is fine right? Well no, if the UBS backhaul network experiences congestion then packets may be delayed or dropped at random since your VoIP traffic is not actually tagged as priority traffic over other UBS traffic. The backhaul network does not support different CoS flows for UBS currently.

What you can do to manage this is employ intelligent devices at either end to manage how traffic is ingress and egressing and look at how it is preforming. You can then throttle traffic as appropriate, however it does not give you the flexibility of a backhaul network which supports QoS. Also if your bandwidth is an unknown to some extent across that backhaul network this makes it harder again.

Distance reduces signal strength, but during install there are preset margins for signal fade etc so even if your signal degrades to some extent in the future due to buildings going up, trees etc then there were be sufficient signal for a reliable connection. This is margin, not a fail safe. If somebody builds a 15 story building directly in your line of sight next door then you will still be in trouble :)

Distance has negligible effect on latency at these distances, microwaves are pretty quick ;)

Yes, residential use but through the day also and with 5 - 6 PCs, up to 4 or 5 users at a time.

I changed back to ADSL (after not even having a phone line for 4 or 5 years) mainly because Ihug don't resell Wired Country anymore so they were utterly unhelpful, unmotivated and unknowledgeable on the problems I was having - a lot of buck passing and stunned silences after lots of hold music.

The few other choices for residential Wired Country didn't provide the data allowance for the $$$ and the speed if I remember rightly is max 2Mbps (expensive). Thanks to Xnet I am now getting 6.5Mbps most of the time and as much data as I want for not much more coin even once the phone rental is added in. Hopefully save a few bucks more once naked DSL arrives.

Just to chip in with the Wired Country thing: We have been with Wired Country since April with VFX and have had approximately three outages in that time (I don't count the time that I changed my ISP password, forgot to update the router, went to work and the family at home didn't have any phone or internet all day!

).

The reliability has been great and is improved now that call forward - unreachable has been implemented (so that we don't have to worry about whether the connection has gone down). Of course we are residential which is an entirely different scenario but I have been impressed with the reliability.

Hi Reece,

I have been testing at a customers site a Quadro 2x on a Compass Wireless/Wired Country connection for the last week now and seems to work well. I am getting 12ms ping times to the WorldxChange servers, and it has not missed a beat yet.

We are going to do the final install on site next week with a Quadro 2x, SIP trunk with multiple simultaneous calls and on a 2mb symmetrical connection.

The quality of call, even on G729a is awesome, and any small concern I have had about using a wireless link has been dispelled since I will have DVX Fail Over on their trunk to a redundant POTS line we are retaining in the building.

I am sure that the boys from 3Bit will not steer you in the wrong direction.

For another site we are going to have a Compass Wireless connection with a UBS backup, will be interesting to see how that goes.

thanks for the info guys.
would still like to hear if any one has an idea about a preferred method for the data, or if this is the right track(compass wireless).
there is another option araneo wireless, but we appear to be in the brown area(ref: http://www.araneo.net.nz/coverage/akl_se/view) which is of some concern.
anybody have any experience with Araneo?

VFX is the residential service, DVX (which you're looking at) is the business service

$20 per line
$5 per DDI or $30 for a block of 10
