Evening all,

Can anyone suggest a 'decent-speed, reliable, affordable' WIRELESS internet provider in the wellington region, namely Victoria Hall in the University?

I simply ask this is because of the horrible data allowance of 6Gb a month per student who stays in the hall, and having to pay an whopping $130 for additional 6Gb of data. I wasn't informed of this and only being told internet will be provided and having paid for 10 weeks worth of rent I dont have a choice but to find a way to pay for my own internet. I am not a heavy downloader, but the occasional entertainment or online gaming like Dota or LoL. So would prefer uninterrupted decent speed internet. With no landline provided, ADSL or fibre optic is out of the question so all I am left with is through wireless connection.

Any ideas as to what my options are? It does not have to be wireless if there is any other way. Or whoever that stayed in the Victoria Hall has ever experience and overcome this?

There is Woosh, but it is not quick at all and latency can be awful. If you're on Spark you can get 1gb per day on their hotspots which are pretty good around the Wellington region.

Is your apartment line of sight to any houses? Could set up a wireless link maybe?

Actually I want to ask. Why can't you get what your Uni provides?

Looking at their website they offer it.

2degrees is probably in your area in which case you can get 12GB for $99 in their zone, speeds about average 5mbps, 1.5mbps dl/up
The only issue I see here is that you play League of Legends. 2degrees + League of Legends is not a good mix, to actually connect to PVP.net you need to VPN in and to actually play in game you need to shut off the VPN.

Not practical.

Vodafone and Spark however.
Vodafone = $80 for 5GB
Spark = $89 for 6GB

If y'all read a bit more he can get the Internet the university provides, but the 6GB bandwidth cap is considered insufficient. Victoria Hall appears to be 282 The Terrace, which is a way up from the business area.

Honestly my suggestion is either pay for 4G or "suck it up" and give up gaming for a while.

Spark could potentially be a great idea. But leaving that to the last resort if I couldn't find anything better.
What do you mean by wireless link? Through someone else's house?

I must have missed the internet page when I signed up for Victoria Hall. You have a link somewhere? I still couldn't find it. New to the university :)

Yeah. $80 for 5Gb is not a solution :)

I am in Victoria Hall, 282 The Terrace. Yes, but who would've expected just 6Gb is given and internet is cut off after exceeding. NOT EVEN A SLOW INTERNET! AM.NOT.HAPPY! :(

I can probably go without gaming, but if there's an option out there that enables me to game then why not? haha.

Yeah if you know somebody in line of sight to your apartment you can just create a wireless link from their house to yours with some special wireless gear (will cost about $300 or so).

Yeah if you know somebody in line of sight to your apartment you can just create a wireless link from their house to yours with some special wireless gear (will cost about $300 or so).

I am new in town, so I dont think I know someone living within distance lol. which, is also another reason I stayed in Victoria Hall ;/

it says in the 2015 brochure that "internet plans can be purchased once in house", that the $130 you have talked about? if so thats ridiculous in this day and age

Off topic but http://www.vichouse.co.nz/ plays music with no option to mute it either. I'd say that's also pretty ridiculous in this day and age.

$130 is a bit much.. I can sorta remember Manakau Tech being cheaper then this when I looked at their brochure.

I just used the volume mixer. Not my taste of music.

Anyway quoting from the actual website.

Broadband Internet Every room is connected to the internet through our provider, Vistagate. Residents can sign up online when connected to the internet network and 'top up' at the office. The system works on a pre-paid basis. The cost is $20 a month and there are a number of data plans to choose from. If you go over your cap, simply top up again. The speed is up to 24Mbit. Wireless internet is also available around the hall, including in the lounge and dining room

This seems to be their ISP, no actual prices or plans but from what their website says it seems to do Fibre so it may not be that bad. Could just be a fibre fed into multiple APs around the house.
