Reading an article this morning about the construction of the tunnels at Waterview and how they're about 2.4km in length, can our mobile carriers do anything about coverage within the tunnels or will we just have to deal with a dropped call?

Mobile carriers need to stay out of tunnels.
You never know when you might need to get out of a phone call, "static static sorry, breaking up, static static, tunnel" as you sit in a cafe.

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

pretty sure there will be repeaters/transceiver elements put in there.

might be the same with radio, the 400m tunnel at work you loose radio reception and almost loose cell reception through it, but it is only single lane and about 3.5m tall.

Just spent a few days in Singapore and there is 3g/4g all across the MRT which is mostly below ground.
No one in Singapore likes to be isolated from their device!

Definitely doable but guessing it will cost some serious cash and need NZTA buy in to install and maintain the gear however.

Why would NZTA have to buy and install the gear?

I would expect Telecom/Voda to install their gear and pay for it.

NZTA have cameras/control center for emergencies.

I've heard that they may well be installing "leaky coax" into the tunnels for am/fm etc... Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe johnr could advise?

I think that is how it is done. I believe the likes of the police do similar too for their comms.

Yeah good luck with that, it's a non subsidized service, so they provide "free" wifi but charge deluxe prices :-)

If more people take up using ad blockers, then ad supported services like free wifi will slowly dwindle away or become pay only. All these things cost $$$ to provide.
