If this thing takes off (let's hope it doesn't) and Spark doesn't have a decent response, I will disconnect my mobile. I am not playing whack-a-mole. I've wasted enough time on that, here in the Philippines.

So Spark, what is your response going to be?

I would like to see telcos allow their customers to disable SMS altogether. I haven't used it for years, but occasionally get annoying spam.

I totally agree! If Spark had a function to turn off SMS they may well increase my loyalty. Other option could be an app, but is there is any good ones? I'd like to reject messages from senders who are not in my phone book. As in reject, not just bin.

Agreed, but once that cat is out of the bag it's the good customers who end up wasting their time deleting crap. Just have to look at Facebook B&S groups to see how idiotic some of the masses are.

The fact they end up with worthless crypto while the scheme operators take cash for spam won't help in the short run. What I am not prepared to waste my time with is reporting them all under AUP if this takes off. I will just put it on prepaid and turn it off or disconnect all together.

Would be rather obvious is SMS rates spike way up all of a sudden...

Horrible blockchain idea, will just make for an even worse image for something that can be so good...

Maybe that can put that blockchain into a personal cloud and make it super awesome.

Blockchain hype. No need of Blockchain for this. John Doe has no damn clue what blockchai is.

Stupid idea.

Not everyone has data on their phone or knows how to use it, I know people who only do calls and texts, with other stuff they get lost.

Also my Doctor and others send appointment reminders by SMS. Be better to just hit the customers that sign up and allow their phone to be used that way.

Already have heaps of places using stupid SMS services to send things that are not their own number, so this would just result in more missed SMS because they come from spammy numbers that are blocked in truecaller.

While the telcos are adding the option to opt out of SMS, add one for phonecalls too. Sick of my spotify playback stopping, and falling back to 3g just because some muppet has dialed my number on their phone, even with truecaller rejecting everything not in my contacts I still have the phone accept the call enough to interupt what I am doing before rejection of the call.

I still use text messaging for business/work colleague contacts.

Whatsapp and all the rest of these apps are quiet unprofessional. For personal messaging though, whatsapp is definitely the way to go.

On iOS under settings there is an option to filter unknown senders, so if it did become a problem at least there are options to hide messages who aren't contacts

So far the only thing my car can read to me is an SMS message. With WhatsApp I'm already in the carport with the engine off when I find out I'm supposed to get the bread/milk/wine whatever on my way home.

SMS is the only universal messenger for cell phones. Viber/FB/Whatsapp etc rely on the receiving party having it installed, running and having data available. None of this is an issue with SMS.

Additionally SMS does not suffer from bloating - remind me how big Viber is now days - it must be approaching 100Mb, which is ludicrous for an IM app.

If you have to have all the trendiest instance message apps installed plus the usual ones it all takes an escalating toll on your battery life and data usage - SMS barely even sips the phones resources.

It is ironic that anyone would propose banning SMS due to unwanted advertising - putting advertising on your screen is why Viber/FB/Whatsapp exist at all.

IMO no one is going to run a spam-bot for long - the abuse they'll cope in return will quickly dissuade them.
