raytaylor: Woosh had quite a big rural customer base around Invercargill from the days of project probe.
It has been pointed out to me that their urban towers cover something like a million people so they have the vertical assets there to build a successful 4g network and take on the 3 cellular companies if they wanted to sell to the lower socio economic class on prepay / mid to high cap plans using usb sticks.
They can undercut naked dsl - if they are using something like LTE and have the money to deploy it.

There are a few companies doing this overseas i've noticed, they provide dirt cheap wireless internet compared to the big telcos but with limited coverage, for data devices only. Some provide higher roaming rates outside of these areas, others seem to just make it those areas only.

I think this wouldn't be a bad move, but i've yet to see any innovation from this company as of late.

I requested this to be unlocked because Woosh launched new plans on the 30th of November (did anyone notice?) - looks like they're offering Unlimited "ADSL-Like Speed" wireless broadband for $75 per month in some areas: http://www.woosh.com/broadband-and-phone/weekly-broadband-3/

I honestly thought that Woosh didn't exist anymore.

Yes, was a surprise to me also. They must have had some more investment.

If you look at the geographic areas covered they appear to be very specific. I guess they're possibly still operating just in the locations where they still have government contracts or subsidies?

USB cable & modem only supported on 32bit Windows & G3/G4 Mac.

Guess they like their olden day thinking...  While I'm sure that is a lie and they do have 64-bit USB driver compatibility it just re-enforces why I'd never recommend it to a friend.

Their router has Ethernet and WiFi built in - not sure what the router model is but it looks pretty new.

eXDee:
ripdog: Everyone is having a laugh at the speeds, but I bet there are plenty of rural folks who would be quite happy with ADSL speeds if they had a decent data cap.

Vodafone reps in this thread gloating about 4g, but what's the point in 4g if you're scared to use it in case you run over cap - and either get slowed down to hell or a monster bill?

There are rural wireless services provided by small companies in regions all over NZ that provide much faster speeds than that. Eg a local one ive had experience with does up to 15 to 30 megabit download on theirs depending on location.

I'm now getting 50 on mine since I upgraded the antenna.

Guess that makes it even more WTF, why mention USB requirements if there is no USB-PC connection.  Guess they've edited an old page from ages ago and didn't proof it then.

They have wireless in all the areas in the right-hand-side list? A coverage map would be more useful, IMO.

I'm not sure what the other regions are to be honest (assuming they're RBI). I know there is a number of Woosh towers covering Porirua.

I don't think they had a network in some of those areas so would assume it's RBI but their own network on the left. I know their network around the rest of Wgtn had the plug pulled on it.

They have coverage out Porirua way (not sure how far this extends) however Wellington CBD / Miramar etc have been turned off (or are in the process of being upgraded).

A pity really. It was such a good idea when it first launched - faster than (then-) Jetstart too. What happened Woosh? Where did it all go wrong?
