im just curious why you actually need something like this in the first place, that you couldn't just use a hotspot on your phone for?

I just use a Spark MF910 or E5220 in the car with a Skinny SIM. They are not permanently installed but it wouldn't be to hard to do. The MF910 even has external antenna connection ports.

in low signal areas, i have been known to roam around with my MF910 running, antennas plugged in stuck to roof.

works well for those edge cases where there's no signal and you don't wanna deploy the satellite! just the right mix of signal.

Does anyone know if the B315s provided by NZ ISPs are provider locked, or worse, locked to specific accounts?

They are not locked, but some have less generic firmware than others. It is only the SIM cards used for Fixed Wireless Broadband that are locked to a particular device.

Maybe a silly question but is there any reason to not just hotspot to your phone?

Oh, how do I want thee, let me count the ways

  1. Permanent fixture that stays with the car
  2. Permanent fixture that ups the WAF (wife acceptance factor)
  3. Permanent fixture that is available to any driver, any passenger and device, EVEN when I'm not in the car
  4. Doesn't drain my phone battery
  5. No loose cables
  6. Antenna extension for better signal
  7.  ...
  8. Take your pick, there's loads more ...

Supercolor: ... but I thought it would be neat to have a seamless wifi transition for devices between home car and work ...

cool Nice way to mess with Wi-Fi mapping services from Google & Wigle.net to have a mobile roaming and stationary SSID.
