Really? I thought DSL wasn't available at all and it was all satellite (for internet, anyway)?

Nope - MBIE funded some of the backhaul - media release is here from 2014

Just looking at this thread again. While I realise cellphone coverage is coming to Haast (soon) did the ADSL2+ thing mentioned in the above line not happen? I just looked on the Broadband Map and it doesn't mention anything about Haast having ADSL.

highly suspect that's been put in the too hard basket.

Don't recall exactly if that area is DMR or Sat fed, iver way requires alot of work..

When wireless providers are spouting their offerings.. suppose chorus let them have it?

Love the comment "Improved data coverage and speed" thought they have no coverage currently. Thought the site was going to be built by the Rural Connectivity Group?

Awesome, thanks John! Silly question, it will take some time to go live (and appear on the coverage map), right? And I think you said the backhaul to it would be by microwave eh?

I'll be curious to see what the coverage footprint actually ends up looking like.

It's a new 5G tower with Conklin backhaul lol :)

I wonder if this is one of the 3G non-data sites? I think they were building a few sites, but voice only at this stage until they get better backhaul in to Haast in a few years time.

Think of the complaints if packet switch data is not enabled on the site LOL

wellygary:

Although the big question to be asked is by how much they are expanding the backhaul capacity ( which I am presuming is still a microwave link )

The fact they are only installing a 3g site makes me think they are worried that the link will get easily saturated...

Or maximum compatibility with new and older phones....in a part of the country that isn't very wealthy.

They are so people can call 111 when someone has a crash.
