jbard: Is their a map of all the wifi hotspots in NZ already - if not maybe we should put one together?

Free octagon wireless in dunedin is pretty good, you only get 50mb but its quick and the coverage area is actually pretty good.

Would appreciate all the free wifi hotspots in NZ being listed on purpose built directory http://www.freewifi.net.nz

Can list/drill down to suburbs.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Unfortunately, that site hasn't been updated in over a year. He used to have useful downloads like poi files for GPS, but all gone now. Pity.

Like I said feel free to submit Wi-Fi and Hot Spots at www.freewifi.net.nz

And thanks I now know what poi files are and can be used for.

www.freewifi.net.nz Doesn't appear to have much especially with regards to the Hawkes Bay region. I would have thought McDonalds would be listed (assuming that they do have free wifi as I am yet to try).

Great to see someone working on this, so I'm almost reluctant to mention some minor niggles with the site:

1. The suburb in Auckland is called “Eden Terrace”, not “Edent Terrace”

2. If I search for “wi-fi” in “Edent Terrace” I get 0 results, so I expand my search and search for “wi-fi” in Auckland, then I get:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method allCategorySeoUpdater::capitalize() in /home/rachel/public_html/wp-content/plugins/all-category-seo-updater/php/allCategorySeoUpdater.class.php on line 539

I think there is a need for something like http://www.freewifi.net.nz but there could be a difficulty in getting a critical mass of sites listed before people start using it and cafe owners and others see the value of listing in it.... a sort of chicken or the egg scenario.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the spell check - sorted.

Am looking into #2 issue.

Chicken and egg scenario...  have to start somewhere. Although this site is new, it is getting traffic for people wanting free wifi througout NZ.

Also when there is a mass of visitors to NZ for RWC, a lot of then will expect free wifi, this will should prove exceptionally fruitful for those businesses listed.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Well, they won't be able to restrict it from coming inside now will they?

Or will they? ;-)
