Although the big question to be asked is by how much they are expanding the backhaul capacity ( which I am presuming is still a microwave link )

The fact they are only installing a 3g site makes me think they are worried that the link will get easily saturated...

Or maximum compatibility with new and older phones....in a part of the country that isn't very wealthy.

To be honest, and no one will say this publically, the income or otherwise of the locals is totally irrelevant, the only reason this site is being installed is for Tourists, if there was not the tourist traffic they would be getting nothing....

Waitangi in the chathams has twice the population of Haast are still has no mobile coverage...

I saw a write up in one of the coast newspapers that showed the tower structure being raised earlier this week. Switch on cant be far away as public statements have said switch on in May 2018, so less that 28 days to go...

Have you got a link to it (or is it in paper form only)?

Its from our internal media monitoring at work - the Hokitika Guardian if I remember correctly. Not sure if they publish online publically. Looks like most other light pole cell towers but without the light! The VSAT is clearly visible with what looks like a 1.2M dish

Site is now active.

https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/haast-3g-mobile-tower-switched

But its unclear if it has No Data at all or no high speed data?, I'm getting the feeling that it has no data fullstop....

" Residents and visitors will be able to txt and make phone calls on three mobile networks – Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees."

"It uses satellites to connect to the national network for voice and text services but high speed broadband won’t be available until a permanent 4G solution for Haast and other locations on the West Coast can be built.  "

From reading that no mobile data which makes sense as satellite backhaul

Now wait for all the locals / tourists to log faults as no mobile data on the site

Yeah I can see particular issues with tourists who are heavily using OTT services rather than the PSTN directly

As part of the Rural Connectivity Group, 2degrees, Spark and Vodafone have worked together to give Haast township mobile coverage for the first time with the completion of a fully operational 3G mobile tower.
