IMO this is domestic terrorism and needs to be handled as such. No different to if someone was blowing up bridges because they opposed traffic.

Wanton wilful damage yes,

But I'm not sure it gets into "terrorism" which in NZ  has at its core, intimidating a populous, or threatening a government....

I wonder if these idiots are inconsistent enough to carry a phone on them. It would be nice if they were signing the visitor book.

Do those numbnuts want surveillance at every intersection watching those towers?  Because that’s how you get surveillance

Hopefully they have caught the person responsible:

----

"Man charged following cellphone tower arsons, Wanaka"

A man has been arrested and charged in Wanaka in relation to a series of cellphone tower arsons in the area over the past few months.

The 41-year-old has also been charged in relation to the Lindis Pass cell tower arson in early July.

He is due to appear in Queenstown District Court today charged with today facing charges of arson and firearms offences.

Acting Detective Sergeant Julie Bowman says these arsons were not only frustrating for Police, but posed a serious risk to our community.

“The team have worked tirelessly investigating, and we are thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the actions of this individual.

“This is a good result for our community and they should feel confident we will always work to hold those to account to carry out such mindless attacks.”

Acting D.S Bowman would like to thank the Wanaka community for their assistance in these investigations.

“Police take these matters seriously, as they have – and continue to have – a significant impact on our community.”

As these matters are now before the court, Police can provide no further comment.

Prison for a very long time if found guilty and made to pay for all the damage caused  even if it comes down to selling everything they own!

What he'll probably get is a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket, zero reparations and home detention.

I've got money on "mental health" playing a part,....

The fact that they have also charged him with a the Lindis pass attack (80km and and hour's drive away) makes me think that they have followed some form of forensic trail to connect both attacks

Don't be so optimistic. He'll get off on a technicality due to incorrect spelling on a search warrant.

Edit:

richms: So now they have a name, will the telcos cut this guys service off?

No - the opposite.

He'll also go on the special list where the telco's record and archive all of his location, call's, voice mail, texting and internet data so that next time around there is an absolute gold mine of data for police, SIS and Interpol to mine. Whenever he goes within eye-shot of any telco shop, the cameras will follow his every movement. Weirdly his sim card(s) will never expire, even if they have zero credit for 10 years. His trace routes will always have a longer ping time and more hops than other peoples.

His behaviour will make his conspiracy theories become reality.

That one is not going to be cheap to re-instate (because of what and where it is). Pretty sure the TMP/TTM for that site ran into the tens of thousands of dollars!
