Hi.  I'm a complete newbie when it comes to VoIP.  I have set up up an old laptop running AsteriskNOW (freePBX) running on CentOS.  This works fine.  I have set up a SIP hardwired phone (Grandstream GXP1405) and some softphones on my desktop and even iPhone which are all registering and I am able to make calls between them.

But my nightmare is with the GS HT503 and the FXO port.  There are soooo many parameters to be set in this device and I am finding it all overwhelming.  After wasting 5 days on this it is putting me off the whole VoIP thing to be honest.

I can get inbound calls to ring an extension (by setting Unconditional Call Forward to 100@localip:5060).  But for the life of me I can make outbound calls.  First I got call could not be connected at this time message.  Then I got all lines are busy messages.

Can someone who has this ATA give me a quick primer on what settings I need to change?

Or should I just ditch it and get a Linksys ATA?

Thanks, Marty.

The FXO port is "foriegn exchange office" ie the telecom exchange. If you are connecting a voip pbx to telecom you need a gateway, not an ATA (maybe it can be setup for that?). Otherwise the FXO port is only good as a failover option in case Asterisk goes down.

More likely you want to plug in some analogue gear to the IP PBX, so you need to use the FXS (station) port only. Ethernet port connects to the switch just like your other voip devices. Hopefully the setting make more sense now...

Time to find a new industry!
