Just wanted to open up a thread about 2talk Access, see if anyone has any experience with it and discuss some of the technical aspects of it. It looks to be quite a different service than is being offered (certainly to retail customers) anywhere else in NZ.

I currently look after two phone systems (Avaya and Cisco) both of which are making all calls primarily over 2talk SIP trunks. One site has Snap VDSL, the other has a 'dedicated' CallPlus Naked ADSL2 connection

There isn't much information around about it other than the pricing page on the 2talk website, http://www.2talk.co.nz/access/

Basically it looks as though they are providing xDSL connections with a private 2talk IP address by default which would improve security somewhat as far as attack surface. Also means that internet connection wouldn't be as useful for much more than web browsing. On some plans for $10 extra you can add a public IP. I suspect for most users of this service, this 2talk access connection would usually be dedicated to VoIP however.

The plans for work start at $60/month for a naked ADSL 'voice trunk' which has no internet access, or for $95/month you can take that up to 300GB.

What I love about this idea is that in theory it should make the 2talk SIP trunking experience even more reliable. We have been having outages every couple of months through Snap, seems to be less on the CallPlus line.

As soon as it was announced I emailed their tech support asking a few technical questions and got an efficient 10 word response which told me
1) All products are Naked DSL
2) Telecom wholesale product is EUBA 0
3) They are using port based authentication

I still don't know exactly what they mean by port based authentication - I was trying to find out whether I would have to reconfigure usernames and passwords on the ADSL modems or if it would just connect straight up as soon as they took over the connection. Hoping it is the latter but what happens to PPP then...

Anyway, I look forward to hearing users experiences as they come up, unfortunately I probably won't be switching over to it at this stage as things are working well as they are so no reason to change.

From what I understand it just means that they use the exchange's ISAM port to authenticate. It is what Telecom do and it means that in your modem you can just have anything as long as it ends with @xtrabb.co.nz. They even allocate static addresses this way. Makes it super simple. So I would guess you would just have something like user@2talk.co.nz and will be sweet as.

Well, it all happened on Thursday.
The change over went smoothly and the connection is very fast.
The QoS is quite cool as you have complete control over it and it works very well, this is a very welcomed addition for someone like me as I don't have to worry about CPE anymore.
I have a few things to note, when the day came to change over the customer did not receive an email saying it was going to happen, 2talk should have done that, also his little Atcom IP01 (on IAX2) would not do outbound calls anymore, was fine on the Telecom connection, not sure what was going on there, calls came up declined, maybe a compatibility issue with the IP01? changing it to SIP fix it.
There was one other very odd issue, one website could be accessed ubergroup.co.nz, normally I would say who cares but unfortunately they happen to host the customers domain email. Their webmail and outlook would not work, the work around was to get Ubernet to forward all his emails to a gmail account and use his gmail account only, will eventually move his domain to another provider.
2talk say it is an issue on the customers network, not saying their wrong but it is very unlikely, worked before the change over, just sayin.
Anyway if using 2talk for your phones I do recommend it.

The main use of CPE based QoS is for upstream, not downstream. Downstream QoS can really only be controlled by the ISP, not the CPE as it has very limited ability to control what packets are being sent from the ISP.

Regardless of the connection type if you want reliable QoS you still need to configure this for the upstream, this is particularly important with ADSL2+ as upstream is so limited.

The up and down QoS is controlled by 2talk.

That's fine for downstream, but you can really only control upstream QoS in your CPE/router in exactly the same way downstream can really only be controlled by your ISP and not the CPE/router.

Yes, I agree, maybe 2talk are just bandwidth limiting then?
