Hi I have been looking around at products to setup voip for calling to germany via my slingshot broadband connection without having to have my pc powered up 24x7.
I have a netcomm 4 port router and am wanting to know a cost effective way of setting up that will give me a good quailty voip experience. the more I read on voip the more I get confused on what to buy.
At the moment I think I need a PAP2 gateway and a cordless phone then a provider such as voipdiscount.com which would give me free landline calls to germany.
Any advise on which way to go please.

i use skype on my tablet pc and im happy with the quality. normal headphone is enough, it is crystal clear for me (as long as you have good internet connection). i also uses the cheap VOIP USB phone, the quality is good.

i also use skype over vodafone 3G network on my nokia mobile phone (IM+ for skype from shape services). the quality is superb, just like talking on normal gsm network.

i would say get a headphone with mic+skype (+ webcam for video call) installed on your pc. if u have lots of money to spend, get Wifi skype phone.

note: i dont know the quality of voipdiscount but u can try first from your computer. some of the voip provider that provide free call to landline, they will usually disconnect you after certain time (from my experience).

If you don't mind Skype-

I picked up a Linksys CIT400 in the US and have been using it very happily. Very good voice quality and battery life.

I do have one serious issue with it that I've been meaning to track down -- the phone is dual mode in the sense that you connect it to your land line and can use it for land line calls as well as Skype calls over the net. That worked fine in the US but seems to freak out when I connect it to my Telecom line here.

It thinks the line is ringing and there's a lot of noise and so I just don't connect it to the land line. I assume there's an easy fix for this but haven't taken the 20 minutes to investigate.

sorry, i do not realize that you wanted something to 'bypass' the pc.

few suggestion:

1.skype phone as mentioned by rcw - dual
2.wifi skype phone, so you can use it as long as you have wifi connection. very handy as you can use it anywhere in your house
3.if u use symbian smartphone or windows mobile, u can get skype installed on it, and call over the vodafone hsdpa network - this is very handy and i use it a lot

so far, i can only tell you about skype as i have try a few other providers but i did not get the same quality. so i stick with skype.

if u subcscribe to skype in, you can get germany local number, and people from germany can call u at skype for local cost only.

voipdiscount.com will work well for Germany, my friend uses it to call his family over there. You don't get cut off (provided you keep the account topped up ever 120 days etc). The servers for voipdiscount & other Betamax "clones" are mostly EU based, so work well for calling that area. You then either setup on a PAP2T or an iTalk Grandstream phone (factory reset these 1st to wipe existing preloaded configs).

I see on Ebay they have pap2 unlocked from vonage. Do you think this would work same as pap2t? Also there is the Linksys RT31P2 Broadband Router PAP2 with 2 Phone Ports would this work as I could remove my nettcomm modem?

Surely the easiest way, is to either get a VOIP phone (you can buy a Grandstream GXP2000 for $US80 plus about $20 for shipping off EBay and it supports 4 lines) or an ATA device to connect a regular analogue phone to the network for about $US40 also off eBay. I have an AT486 here that has been working fine for some months now and it supports two lines i.e can connect to two SIP providers.

The PAP2's are probably better quality but the AT486's work quite well enough.

Be careful when buying these, we have reported replica / false units being brought from Trademe, they all have the same MAC address details in firmware but different MAC sticker...be very very careful
