Faxing over VoIP will always have some issues. My experience with VFX
- I've had no issues sending / receiving on VFX using my PAP2T & built in modem on my laptop. I am a very infrequent faxer though.
- I have had issues with a couple of my customers on longer ADSL lines sending / receiving faxes over VFX
- Generally I have not seen many issues sending faxes over VFX, but where I have seen issues (mainly on longer ADSL lines) it is usually in the receiving.

So, yes it works, but ideally you need a SPA2102 or WRP400 etc (or one of the other ATA/Routers that supports T.38), and a good stable ADSL connection.

Well I have a Belkin F5D8230-4 so I guess I would have to upgrade unless it could work as a repeater with the WRP400 for example. Any 802.11n routers that support t.38 out there?

Hi-ho,

I can't say for WX as I've not used them, but a a general statement it depends on the termination that the VOIP provider uses if you're going out to the PSTN.

Their termination points (Where they connect to the PSTN) have to support T38, otherwise you'll get variable results..

I've had good results using an FX100P <-> asterisk <-> linksys PAP2-NA <-> Fax setup at home for a while, but not played around with delivering faxes over sip trunks..

Might be time for a play me thinks.. :-)

In order to get stable fax communication over IP you need a T.38-enabled ATA/router as well as a VoIP-provider, who supports T.38.
The only devices with T.38-support, I know, are the latest FritzBoxes from AVM (7170, 7270 and some others).
If you fax with regular codecs (G.711 and so on) you will regularly experience failures.

Besides this (at least in Europe) some VoIP-providers offer a fax-to-eMail service, so you get your own fax number, but incoming fax calls are received by a server and forwarded as eMail attachment to you, which is quite comfortable, since faxes will reach you wherever you can access your eMails.
Also some providers have a service for sending faxes by uploading common file formats through the web to their server.
So this can be a comfortable alternative to T.38 equipment.
