Hi all,

I have been looking at dabbling with VOIP and Mynetfone seemed a good place to start with a prepay service. Try as I may I can't signup. They seem in NZ to want you to have bought one of their products from a retailer first. i.e. $10 softfone.

I emailed them but no reply. I see in Ozz you can for $20 setup an account with your own gear but that doesn't seem an option in NZ.

Second question. If I opt later for a DID number is this a local area number like Auckland or is it an Aust number?? 011XXXXXXX which I don't think is a NZ area code..

Never signed up with NZ, just with their Aussie service. NZ does use the same backend.

If you're only after a prepay service and no DID I'd probably opt for 2talk.

If I don't get any joy with Mynetfone I'll look at 2talk but for thir prepay you have to take a 028 moble number or pay $15 / month for a real number.... I see you use VFX. Any good?? Do they tie your account down to IP address originate or user ID login??

I use both VFX and 2talk. VFX is rock solid and I can recommend as a landline replacement (as we have done). 2Talk offer the prepay service which works great as an outbound calling service. If you don't want the $15 option with 2talk you can take a free prepaid 028 number.

You can add a local line to your 028 account. Once in account options, choose add lines or services. You can then choose a local number for a variety of regions and add it to your account. The charge is $7 per month which is prepaid and includes local calling. Just remember to login with your local number and not the 028 number.

2Talk seems to work well and has loads of options including a softphone and simultaneous ring.

We use 2Talk as a landline replacement and it's been rock solid for us also.

I see from aquire.co.nz that you can buy Linksys PAP2T VOIP ATA preconfigured for VFX. Are these open or are they locked only to VFX and can't be modified or used for another carrier later??

Even when configured to VFX you can still use the second line for other operators. I have a PAP2T at my parents-in-law, one line is VFX, the other is Mynetfone AU.

As for Mynetfone, when I opened my account a couple of years ago I had no problems getting an Australia number. When I opened the account for my parents-in-law about six months ago they asked for an Australia address from someone to "recommend" them, and asked for them to call to provide the credit card details for payment... I guess they got too much problems before?

Got this back from VFX

"The VFX account is locked to the MAC address and device type that you give us for provisioning. We auto provision them when you call (they are not preconfigured with a number) and as such you don't get the details to use on another device."

Not sure I like the idea of being locked to only one device as I can't try out different fones or PBX systems.. may look at 2Talk

I'm currently using MyNetFone in Australia and signed up for one of their Whirlpool specials so I got a free DID anywhere in Australia or Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch (I chose Christchurch) for $0 per month and 10c untimed calls to anywhere in Australia. I'm not sure if someone outside of Australia can sign up to it (they called my cellphone to verify my credit card details), but the Whirlpool specials page is here: http://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool

I'm moving to Wellington next month and was looking at moving to the NZ branch of MyNetFone, but their plans aren't nearly as good as the Australian one for some reason. It actually works out cheaper for me to keep the Australian plan where I pay AU$0.029 per minute to NZ (which works out to about NZ$0.034 per minute), but all the NZ plans are NZ$0.05 per minute.

In terms of call quality I've found they're excellent and I haven't noticed any downtime.

Agreed. The AU plams are better than the NZ ones..

No. It's simply a NZ DDI linked to an Aussie account so all calls cost you.

Ah OK. Will stick with VFX and 2talk then. We only use our second line for outbound calls when the main phone is busy so the 15 minutes free on the 2talk 028 line is a good option.
