Hey all,

First post here so be gentle.

I'm looking at going naked DSL shortly and am trying to figure out the best option for VOIP.  I'm working on the hardware side at the moment (I think I'll go with 2talk for the service side) and I wanted some advice on wireless handsets.  I run a wireless network at home and it'd be great to have handsets that connect directly to that.  I was looking at the Linksys WIP300 and WIP330 but they don't appear popular and I was wondering if they work well or not?  Doesn't look like anyone is selling them locally so I was wondering if they are a dud.  I haven't looked at any other brands yet.  I guess the alternative will be to get a ATA and use my cordless phone through that.

Also I just had a thought would it be possible to get a mobile that could connect over the Wifi and receive calls that way?  If so what am I looking for in a mobile?

Yes, easily done. Nokia E series (E66, E71 are 2 current models) or N series (N95 etc) are your best bet . . .

You've got a couple of options.

1. The Nokia SIP capable handset. These work reasonably well although battery life is poor when running wifi all the time.

2. A wifi phone, the Polycom Spectralink 8002 is the only one I would recommend currently. The Linksys models you referred to aren't great, we did sell them for a while but have stopped.

3. A DECT/VoIP phone such as the snom m3. These work really well, have good range and a better battery life than a wifi phone.

4. An ATA with a standard analog/DECT cordless. This works reasonably well and is the cheapest option. Not as featureful as an actual VoIP phone.

Thanks heaps for all the advice.  I didn't realise that it was going to be so expensive to do this still (probably the industry holding on to traditional phone communication as long as they can!).  I think the only realistic option is to go with an ATA as I can't justify spending so much on something I don't even use that much.  Oh well at least the internet is going to be cheaper!  Thanks especially hads for breaking down the options.  You guys should consider posting that as a sticky/faq for anyone else thinking the same thing.

I'm running the nokia e65. Although it's cumbersome (ie can only have a single wifi network selected for each SIP profile) it is solid and has fabulous call quality (cell quality is shocking where I am). Highly recomended if your phone supports it.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies.  I found this page on the 2talk website regarding the nokia mobiles you can use with wifi/VOIP.  That's in case someone ever reads this thread in the future.

A slight change of tack with this, but I have been looking at installing Asterisk on my server and using it as a gateway for my analogue phones and internet/VOIP.  Does anyone know whether you can use the modem jack to connect to the analogue side?  That would be great if it did then I wouldn't need any more hardware.  Alternatively anyone know of locally available hardware to use (PCI cards etc)?

Cheers

I don't believe a modem can do this as you need a special FXS card that can supply the dial tones etc. ATAs are by far the cheapest option if you want to do this - even if they will be attached through Asterisk as extensions. Take a look at this site for VOIP hardware:

If you are (seriouslty) planning to use Asterisk and want to keep your phone number, why don't you port the number to VFX and configure it on Asterisk/trixbox as a SIP trunk?

You might even save money at the end of the day...

To get the sip on a S60 working on multiple wifi's, install the devicescape software and configure all your AP's online, then choose the fake devicescape AP in the sip configuration

There is no real need to do this. Just create a profile and connect to an AP and then save that profile setting. The SIP settings will then have individual profiles with the name of the AP in brackets () after that. You can then set these to automatically register if you desire or manually connect.

Hi all,

I'm looking at setting up Asterisk but I think it will be a longer term project. So I was thinking about buying a new modem. Are there any recommendations for models that integrate the following?

ADSL modem
Wifi
VOIP (SIP, Analogue outputs)
Wired ethernet (multiple ports)

No doubt this will have been asked on other threads, if you want to direct me there.

I have a Netgear DG834GV - the speil from their website: DG834GV Integrated Gateway is the power in your network. Six products in one, it combines an ADSL2+ Modem, Router, 10/100 Wired LAN Switch, 802.11g Wireless Access Point, Voice-over-IP (VoIP), and SPI Double Firewall...

Here's the link: http://www.netgear.com.au/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessGRouters/DG834GVB.aspx

I did have some initial issues (kept dropping calls after exactly 10mins) - but upgraded the firmware & never had any further issues.

Cheers, Stevo

Draytek makes some very nice units (the 2700 series in particular) that do all of this, but they're not cheap - but in this case you definitely get what you pay for. I've also had a play with the Billion VOIP routers, but I had nothing but problems with it - mostly with the Wifi and it rebooting itself every couple of days and I ended up getting rid of it after a couple of months after 2 warranty returns.

If you want a cordless VOIP phone (I'm guessing this is what you want the analogue ports for) I'd recommend the Siemens C470IP, they're a normal DECT phone but the base station can connect to up to 6 SIP providers (which could be your future Asterisk box). The nice thing is they have good battery life (unlike the cordless VOIP phones that use Wifi) and you can connect other non-Siemens phones to it because it uses DECT. I paid AU$140 when I was living in Australia, I'm not sure if you can get them here in NZ.

Before you go and buy a router just be aware of the limitations if you want to hook this up directly to VFX. While any router with VoIP ports will work with Asterisk if you want to connect directly to VFX in the short term then you are limited to what you can use.
