Hi all,

Sorry if it's a stupid question, I've done a quick forum search and can't seem to find anything unrelated so here goes:

Im currently with Telecom on a standard pots/adsl homeline which suits me fine, however I'd like to get into the voip realm, really just for a couple of the features that the softphones offer, in this case incoming/outgoing call recording. From the research I've done I believe I need some sort of voice modem? Is this correct? And if so can anyone recommend any good devices? Alternativly, if this can be done using my existing connection and some software and a usb phone or similar then that would be great!

Any help would be much appreciated,

2talk offers call recording. You just switch it on and it will record all phone calls in mp3. There is no need to configure a softphone. It does it all at the 2talk end.

I would also recommend 2talk, nice and cheap for you to have a play with, and if you decide it is not for you, then you just stop using it. Their base plan is all prepaid, and comes with all the features you will probably need.

yeah but it doesn't actually seem to have anywhere that describes how it all actually works, it just has the plans etc....as far as I can see

It is a bit confusing.

1. 028 number (free). Anyone can call this number. It terminates either at your softphone which is a piece of software installed on your computer and connected to a broadband connection or an ATA such as a linksys PAP2t (or similar).

2. The PAP2t is a piece of hardware that plugs into your broadband router and operates without the need for your computer to be on. It has a phone plug on the back which you plug a normal phone into.

3. You can make calls from the phone connected to the ATA. You pick up the phone and dial just like a normal phone. You can also use the softphone to dial regular phones just like skype (except you can call regular phone lines).

4. You can also have a local number which terminates the same as above. This allows you to dial local numbers and not get charged.

I would recommend signing up for a free 028 number and downloading the free softphone. Have a play with the softphone. Once you are signed up for an 028 number you can add a local number for $7 per month prepaid (in the user area you login to via the 2talk site). Give the local number out to a couple of your mates and get them to ring it. Then you can see how it works. When you get really confident you can port your local number to 2talk and people will call it just like they used to. It will terminate as above.

If you sign up for 2Talk, you get a "Management" web page that you can log into, that is where you manage all your details including call recording.

The range of options available is very large, including being able to upload your own on hold MP3's, when someone leaves you a voice mail message, the 2 Talk system emails you with a small sound file so you do not even have to have access to your hardware or software VOIP phone to hear your messages etc.

The best way to find out about it, is to sign up for a free account, so you can have a play with it.

Just note that anyone calling an 028 number gets charged (generally) a mobile call. When you call out you get charged (generally) 5 cents per minute. The 028 number is best used for calling out.

+1 for 2Talk. I ended up with the 2Talk500 package which is $15 per month to replace my old Telecom line. And they ported my number over to the VOIP Decimate so that hasn't changed.

Picked up a Linksys PAP2T adaptor which plugs into the rotuer, the old phone plugs into that and you're away laughing.

Dont know if you have tried it yet but if you go to the 2talk homepage and then click on features and when you get the features page you click on Advanced features call recording is the first page that shows up. It has a good description as to how to use it.
