Hi,

I have been on 2talk for a while now, and it is working out really well.

My issue now is that I am looking at upgrading my cellphone to a smartphone, and currently am eyeing up the Nokia N85. However I have read that unlike the N95, the newer nokias like the N85 nd the N96 do not have a built-in VOIP client, but elsewhere I have read that people can connect them to VOIP providers.

Is anybody able to help me out there, because if the N85 will not work with 2talk, then I may have to get a different phone.

The N85 will do VoIP, I have mine connecting to my Asterisk box. You do need to download the advanced VoIP for it though. I try post back a link for you.

I'm glad this has come up, as I'm thinking of upgrading my N82 to an N86 and didn't realise newer phones didn't have VOIP in the ROM.

Is this Advanced VOIP product produced by Nokia? If so, how if at all does it differ from the one that is built into older phones?

Why would you upgrade your n82 to a n86 8mp? I have read somewhere the camera/flash combo on the n82 is still the best throughout the nokia models.. Reading reviews, i think the n85 comes out on top compared to the n86, n86= more camera power, but less battery life.

I'm certainly considering the reviews as I know there's ongoing debate about whether they've matched the performance of the Xenon flash in the N86. So certainly not a done deal yet.

Well, I now have my new phone and am trying to get it to work with my 2talk connection. I have programmed in all the details and am able to get it to register with 2talk, but I can't find how to make it send and recieve calls.

Any help would be appreciated.

Key in the number to call - there should then be a soft key for "net call"
Did you install the VoIP settings? Did you also use the VoIP settings (tools - connectivity - net settings) to setup the 2talk connection?

Sort of, I set it up under SIP settings, which is under net settings. I'll have another play tonight when I get home from work.

Also go into "contacts" and scroll across. Check it is active here.

Yep, once I added 2talk as a service the new tab appeared in contacts. I made a call but it sounded realy bad from the other end. Also, I could not work out how to set it to recieve a call.

Are you running this over wifi or 3G?
If 3G, have your tested over wifi first? Also, if running over 3G, use G729 voice codec.

Using wifi, no point using 3G as far as I can see, data charges would be more expensive than call charges. Just want to use it as an additional handset for my home phone, and also be able to send and recieve calls on my home number when at friends places who also have wireless

Using G729 I calculate that data charges should only be about 3 cents per minute. With both Telecom and Vodafone charging more than 50 cents per minute that seems "more than competitive"

But then you also have to look at it like this;

Telecom and Vodafone don't support VoIP (for obvious reasons), so as much as 3 cents per minute sounds attractive, it also depends on your backwidth avaliability at the time in your area, because you could end up with really messed up calls if you are careful.

Either way, I wouldn't rely of VoIP over 3G anytime soon until (or if ever) it is supported in an offical capacity.
