I was playing with Skype just now, and rang my mobile. Then I got curious about the caller id number that appears (as i dont have SkypeIN).

first was this number: 008615903030501 , which, if i call it, gives me a Telecom generated 'not a valid number' series of four short beeps.

then i made another call, and got this number as caller id: 0061434302871 , which, answers after a few rings with "you have reached the mailbox of 0061434302871" (in an Aussie accent).

Whats the story? Does anyone know?

If I call my landline, it comes up as a private number.

For starters, I know nothing about Skype but...

0061434302871 is an Australian mobile number, although I don't remember what mobile provider has 434.

008615903030501 looks like a chinese number.

A possible reason for you not getting CID info when you call your landline is that Skype probably use a different gateway for landline calls rather than mobile calls.

Best one is voipjet, which uses IAX not sip but there are softphones that work fine. Anyway, you can set your own caller id in the software. Calling people with there home number as the ID on there mobile is always funny ;) and gets an answer for people that are not wanting to take calls from you on your normal number.
