Whilst waiting to acquire a better quality box to install Asterisk, I thought I would try something different. I installed Virtual PC 2007 into Vista and then installed Trixbox into Virtual PC 2007. The install went to completion and I have a working Asterisk/Trixbox system. It was not without its problems, I had to do this twice to get it to work, but so far so good. The initial install generated problems during the "yum" update. The second attempt worked without trouble - stuff happens!
Whilst its probably not as good as a dedicated PC (although its running on an AMD64 4200+ box), I am very happy with the result in terms of call quality (for local calls anyway). The installation correctly selects the required trunk (out of three VOIP providers) depending on the number dialed and handles incoming calls from my US based VOIP provider appropriately. I do not yet have an FXO card so I cannot connect to VFX (via an approved terminator) using this approach.
I will ditch the installation when I have a dedicated PC, but in the meantime - and for learning purposes - this is quite adequate and workable.
Tony, thanks for your really useful installation guide. I discovered a couple of items that I needed to change i.e. "passwd admin" did not work for me and "shutdown -r" needed the addition of "now" to make it work, otherwise, everything went according to your plan.
So now - to find a better spec'd box and an FXO card and install it all again but with a much better appreciation of what needs to be done.
