I'll try that ..although a little scared to press * anything !
I've reset, reconfigured, re-everythinged , factory defaulted ... and now i'm using a softphone ( works every time ! )
My next step is ring SlipShod and try to speak with someone who may be able to help. I guess, for $21 a month they really don't give a fat rats bum about my problem or about spending too much time ( cost/benefit etc ) on my piddling account ... losing me as customer isn't going to worry them too much methinks .

Have just received a message containing the following ...which may help anyone else with the same problem :
"What: I have 8x8. Running on SPA122 ATA.
Problem: I was getting a fast busy on all outbound calls.
Background: I saw here something about you trying *67, and I remembered that I did that too! ...And shortly After I was unable to dial-out! So I had 8x8 push the configs a few times but it still didn't solve it. So I asked them to ask one of their engineers and he said....
Solution: Dial *68 ...and wait for the dial-tone, then hang up, and calls should start working....and they did.
So, although *67 works fine in traditional telecom, evidently some providers don't configure it to always do the same thing....So if *67 breaks it, try *68 to fix! "
My phone is working again now - I really have no idea how I fixed it ...it's fine now .
Although ..I do notice that it can go wonky if there are a few messages left on the 'answerphone ' ....sigh
