I use jitsi, it is more of a font-end to every major social network.

Tango's not bad - I would only use it for smartphone to smartphone and maybe the occasional PC client. AFAIK last time I heard there was no iPad adaption of Tango, so you get the iPhone layout on iPad.

And Jitsi seems like something for my fit - will give it a go now and see how it runs! Thanks folks!

tchart: As much as I hate Apple, FaceTime is awesome. Much nicer than Skype but does require both parties to have a "I" device.

Good old Apple, that big high wall again. One reason why I detest Apple.

I find Skype pretty good to use.

With Skype out you can call pretty well any number you like, so the person you're calling doesn't have to have Skype. It was great when I was in the US recently, I used it on my phone to call the folks back home using WiFi. For a few cents a minute Skype out is very good value. Sure no video but still good.

Apparently http://vsee.com/ is quite good with regards to bandwidth usage (and gives you some control over it, unlike Skype). I've installed it, but haven't really used it.

That looks quite interesting - How well does it work?

You really dont want to install and have running Viber/Skype/Google Hangouts/Yahoo/whatever to talk to the various products. I was moaning just the other day what a pain the fragmented nature of comms has become - maybe this is the solution...

EDIT: Well - maybe its not quite all things to all people - but the concept looked promising

EDIT: Well - maybe its not quite all things to all people - but the concept looked promising

It works just as expected, although IMO the interface looks a though it was designed for cross-platform and not OS native.
But I do agree with your edit that there is still much improvement possible in the area of a universal chat/call program.

I personally run a private 'Mumble' server for friends and family.
(Do not trust the likes of Skype and others.)

Viber for desktop has video calling but you can only use it to video call another viber desktop.
