billgates:

So grandparents can get around to use a skype app on a smart tv that has clunky interface. All smart TV interface and interactions are slow and terrible. If someone can learn to use smart tv apps, then for them a Xbox, Roku, Fire TV speeds, usability are a god send. From the looks of it, only Samsung out of all the TV manufacturers seems to offer a skype app running on a no name unpopular OS. If this was discontinued support on Windows, iOS or Android you will see a big backlash due to user base.

When was the last time you actually USED a smart TV? Every smart tv I have had experience with, in the past 3-4 years has been really good. Perhaps in the VERY early days it was like you described but recently that hasn't been the case.

I have some reasonably savvy older customers, but I can't see them a) shelling $500+ for an xbox to get Skype (see b) , and b) adjusting to ALL the stuff that an xbox CAN do for them. Maybe your Grandies are super up with it, most it's as much about willingness to learn as ability.

" Microsoft has confirmed that it’s ending support for the official Skype for TV app, which means that OEMs that previously offered this app in their TVs will soon remove it, leaving users without a native alternative. However, it’s going to take a couple of months before the app is pulled from compatible TVs."

Just wondering why the app is going to be pulled from the TVs .  Why not just leave it there with no updates..??

To save a bunch of stress related to people not knowing they are ending it, and people trying to get it working.

Microsoft's notice indicates that the app will not receive any more updates, and that support will no longer be offered, but it appears that the underlying service will continue to work. It seems that it's Samsung's decision to remove the app.

If you did pay for a webcam solely for Skype, then depending on how long ago you bought it, I suspect that you may have a case under the CGA.

Before we moved overseas a couple of years ago I bought a pair of Logitech skype cameras.
One we left here for my Mum and the other we took with us.
They connect to the TV, and support Wifi or ethernet. Their ringing tone works independent of the TV sound, as they have their own inbuilt speaker for the ring tone.

These worked really well for us. I think these Logictech Skype cameras could be your answer.

I personally use our Samsung TV every week to Skype my parents. Being from the UK it's an awesome way for my parents to chat to their grandchildren so I'm majorly pissed off about this.

I've now got 2 shiny Samsung webcams that are utterly useless. What else but Skype would you use them for?

What about contacting Samsung in NZ and asking for the app to remain?

I tried that, they told me because Skype removing the background support it wouldn't work. So who would really know.
