I thought something similar was a good idea for a small business setting a couple of years ago... I was wrong. When it's phones, and phones = business (or at least un/happy customers) you really don't want to be trouble shooting under intense pressure. I would highly recommend going with a specialist provider unless you really know what you are doing (or know what you're getting yourself in for). There are a couple of PABX/VOIP guys on Geekzone that are good to deal with. Where are you physically?
If you really want to go it alone, Nicegear is my go-to place for this sort of stuff.

jms042016: For our system, we general avoid using any cloud based solution. If 5 years down the track, a cloud based company that we use decide to close its door, or due to lack of demand, stop support the service we are using, our customers won't be very happy.
Could be said about any provider, not a valid complaint in my opinion. If you had issues, you can number port away to another provider. Easy.

However I can see the expected life span of our system is definitely getting shorter and shorter (Not because of the system failure, it's because newer tech is better/more cost effective). But about 10 years is still expected I believe.

The PBX systems that i support have about a 10 year life expectancy. The hardware doesn't fail but the software gets superseded..

We sign customers on a lease of a maximum of 5 years for a PABX - yea the box will keep working after that but there is so much newer better stuff in 5 years its better to upgrade, especially in the propriety system space (Samsung, LG etc).
