And, seeing as you are going to Paris, you can take a GSM phone, get a local SIM, and forward your 2talk phone for cheap and save on roaming costs this is what I do. Costs me $0.05 per min for the call forward, and CAD$0.05 per min off peak or CAD0.40 on peak to receive the call rather than the $1.50 a min Telecom charges to receive a roaming call on top of the rate they charge people to call your cell. There is also a call back service where you call your number, then it calls you back and you make a call via 2talk. Can use this on your overseas cell to avoid paying $3.50 a min to NZ, or $8 a min to elsewhere!!! (Canadian cell prices are weird, I could get a plan and have unlimited incoming calls but i just have prepay)
You can use the free 2talk softphone, which is easy to use but for an advanced user is a bit basic. Or you can download Counterpath X-lite (this is what i'm using at the moment). Or just get any standard SIP IP Phone or ATA. They have set up instructions at blog.2talk.co.nz - would recommend getting one of the ones listed there if you want easy setup guides.
Also. When you sign up, you sign up for an 028 number, and then you go into the Live management portal, and click the Plans and services link and then choose to add a number and go from there. You then set up the softphone/IP Phone/ATA to connect to newnumber@2talk.co.nz rather than 028xxxxxx@2talk.co.nz. And make sure you select the new number when entering the portal from then on.
I would recommend getting a free account, adding $10 credit and testing it out for a few days, make sure it works well for what you want, and then go ahead and buy a local number.
