Linuxluver: Next step *must* be support for it in Google Talk client on phones and handhelds....hopefully Android first (coz I got one).

It will be Android First.

Asmodeus: On the rates page, it says NZ local is $0.02. So if I call my neighbour it will cost that?

alvin: still can't get a google number

I installed Hotspot Shield* (free VPN with US IP address - comes in handy) and signed up for Google Voice....but fell over at the point it would call my "forwarding" number to verify the attachment with the virtual Google number. But they sent me an email saying I have a number in the San Francisco area code. I just can't use it unless I provide a real US phone number as the forwarding number. International numbers unsupported. :-)

Oh....well.

(*When I'm done with Hotspot Sheild, I uninstall it.)

But now I have a real Google Voice account....which is one step forward.

Now....maybe some company with VoIP can provide me with a US-based number linked to my NZ mobile number (or 2Talk.co.nz number) so I can give it to Google Voice to let me validate the account.

Thinking.....

Have inquired to ORCON for VOIP for mobile phones.
Great value and free to landline NZ and many international call.

Can toggle between VOIP and GSM, but the catch is in a car VOIP is no good and call quality is poor.

Very cheap but still a charge mobile to mobile...

wether its a clever marketing ploy or something..

Confirm you are set to english - US in gmail. Seems to work.. sometimes.. I managed to call from PC to landline.

Doesnt seem to work for calling mobiles.. it says the other end hung up.

Yes...except Google Voice is US only.

Being able to make VoIP calls out to landlines and mobiles from a *Google Talk* client on an NZ cell phone would be new. But we still can't receive calls via the GTalk client....at least not on a conventional number. It may be possible to VoIP call from a GTalk client on another phone to a phone that also has the GTalk client....like we can with Fring and others now.
