Thanks for all your comments - Can I ask the VoIP resellers who responded to this thread to answer just one question:

If I was to use the VoIP SIP client from my iPhone5 (either Goundwire / Acrobits or Bria for me (and the free Zoiper SIP Phone for the kids)),

(1) Will it work with all all three providers above (2Talk / WorldxChange / Snap Plus)?
(2) Which one has the best sound quality

since you will have a fritzbox , have you seen this app

Something Telecom hasn't quite done yet to the mass market. And the features are nice though... why should we have to pay extra just to get caller ID and voicemail?!

I do use VoIP with 2talk, but also have a PSTN line, it's more most people don't need VoIP and don't understand what it /really/ is. For me it's a way to contact my parents but without broadband it doesn't work, broadband is a best effort service and most of the time is not as reliable as the PSTN network. It does have some cool features but 99% of home users don't know what these are or how to use them, the other issue being Naked VDSL + VoIP isn't normally cheaper than having a PSTN phone which for me was very valuable during the earthquakes in Christchurch due to the fact my broadband went down.

In my opinion for your home user the Telecom PSTN network offers unmatched reliability in comparison with VoIP and functioned well during the Christchurch Earthquakes, and since I now live in Wellington after both big quakes I lost both mobile and broadband but had PSTN and was able to make calls.

It's a safety thing for me which most people don't understand, it may be old but it's got proven stability which is the reason why I keep a landline, Telecom has done a very good job in keeping the PSTN network up to standard which is why I don't understand the need to all the sudden switch to VoIP for your standard homephone. This is just my 2c.

But what happens once the copper is removed?

No - did n't think to look - but thanks for the link - just downloaded the lab version - but cant do much until I get the router!

So lets say we have four IOS devices connected to Frizbox - all running this app. What will happen when someone rings us? All the devices will ring until someone answers?

You can choose which numbers ring which extension in the web interface. Each dect handset is also an extension of its own.

LOL - I have evolved in my thinking.... I originally set out to find a single bundled package that handled my VDSL, VOIP, Mobile SIM and hoped someone will tell me go with X. But got confused and lost the plot over the weekend.

However, in a surprising twist, Telecom just came back this morning and told me that if I cancel my ADSL plan, I need to pay them $99, as when my ADSL modem was replaced (as it had a fault) they appeared to have put me on a 12 month contract before they sent me a replacement - not that I ever remember being asked to my best recollection....
Pretty annoyed with myself that I let Telecom sneak a contract on me when I was under the impression that the ADSL router replacement early this year was a sort of Guarantee replacement as it was less than a year old when it developed the fault.

Just asked Snap to put my order on hold till I figure out what the best way forward is after I finish work today.

Right this moment in time - my preferred choice would be to
- Get out of Telecom contract
- Get the bundled Snap VDSL + Snap Plus deal and be done with
- Plug my old phone into the Fritzbox, and have the FritzFone soft phone app on all the devices for the kids

OK - a quick update.

After having a serious look at what is available, I am staying with Telecom. Not because of the old contract (which I was happy to write off had I gone with WorldExchange / Snap); not because Telecom PSTN is more reliable than VoIP (according to michaelmurfy); but because Telecom came to the party with a best offer to stay with them which means I will save a lot moving forward. Plus they gave me a free upgrade to VDSL2 (subject to the usual disclaimers).

We are lucky that we live in a country where we have genuine choice and good competition from smaller players to keep the big telco's honest, competitive and customer focussed. In the absence of agile players in VoIP space, I doubt I would have got such a good service. Yes I failed to move to VoIP - but I am happy with the bundled solution they have given me and what I will be paying for it.

I will stay with Telecom for at least another 12 months and see what is out there in VoIP in a years time. By then we will be closer to having fibre in our area and can make the most of fibre with the VoIP.
