networkn: I was horrified to find out that at home, a dialtone via pstn costs a whopping $50 a month! I was pretty gobsmacked by that! Though I am still at a loss to understand how naked dsl costs more than standard DSL.

Ya, it's normally less than POTS and DSL though.

The copper maintenance costs are currently mostly on the POTS services. When you get DSL over POTS, you only pay a very small portion of the cost of servicing the copper because the line share is apparently picked up by the POTS provider.

So, when you remove the POTS, the copper service fees get handed to the DSL provider...

...at least that's the story we've all been living with for a decade. ;)

There is nothing confusing about it - with DSL you're paying seperately for the cost of the copper connection to your house. With naked DSL you aren't. The copper connection isn't free.

There is nothing confusing about it - with DSL you're paying seperately for the cost of the copper connection to your house. With naked DSL you aren't. The copper connection isn't free.

Either way you are using the copper, if you aren't using a portion of it, you shouldn't need to pay a portion for it? Why would you pay more for less?

I'd hate to say it but your logic is completely illogical.

Actually on a technical level you're making greater utilisation of the copper using DSL than with voice due to greater spectrum utilisation, I'm sure your ISP and Telecom would be more than happy to charge you extra. Voice uses a very small block of between 300 and 3300kHz, whereas DSL uses from 20kHz all the way up to 1.1MHz.

In line with the normal situation in life, using less means you should pay less.

And you DO pay less. The cost of a naked DSL connection is less than a DSL connection and voice line since you're not paying for the voice service.

Your MPF is still connected to the NEAX MDF and still has a disconnect tone on the line.

Can I just say... WHAT THE???

Physical copper cable, and the equipment between the Exchange & you, does NOT get cheaper if it's not used for voice.

Say you live 4 km from the nearest exchange/cabinet, Chorus still have to run 4km+ of physical copper cable from the exchange/cabinet to your house, then they have to lay non-live spares to use if event of customer demand, requests for second phone lines, faults etc etc. Chorus still have to maintain the phone exchanges/cabinets, pay rates (I'd assume) to the local council etc etc.

All these costs are based on factors other than what the copper is used for (at least for now), (such as how many physical lines need to leave the exchange/cabinets, space required by other ISPs, space for voice equipment (?), etc etc.

From what I can tell, you are talking about cable spectrum, which still relies on having a physical cable to the house.

Another part of the equation is with VOIP you get virtually every smartphone available for free. Start with your POTS, DSL and then add what Telecom (or other) charge you for caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, call blocking, digital voicemail and the naked DSL plus VOIP starts looking more economic.

I too am frustrated by the "high" cost of naked DSL also which is preventing me from leaving my wireless provider who sells me 10 GB of data for $54 per month.

Ok well I have been thinking about this some more and I have a couple of questions.

If at each of my cordless dect phones I connect a ATA (there are two), then all calls made via the Dect phones will get routed over IP I presume. How does it work if both of us want to talk on the phone at the same time to the same person (Right now we would both have a cordless phone. Is it the same with VOIP?

I think the analog line is used by sky for pay per view, which isn't something we use a lot, but is quite handy, I take it there is no alternative like booking that over the internet? That functionality is just gone?

The fax we can do with a Fax Server no problems.

Can the ATA be plugged into a ethernet switch/hub?

Can anyone tell me, If I have both phone and internet with Orcon and I move the Phones to VF as part of a two step process of having VDSL + POTS calling, can my internet still remaing with Orcon until such time as unleash churn for the internet services?

I am trying to get the least internet outage possible during that changeover, I'd rather have no oxygen than no internet. It's like sex, it's not really that important until you aren't getting enough.
