If you are going to use Asterisk then make sure you manage the Asterisk.

I'm surprised that with Cisco in your name you haven't heard of firewalling lol? PBX in a flash comes with a strong password manager and fail2ban anyway but you just need to put in the correct firewall rules to only allow access from your office and to your provider - takes 3 minutes......

I'm pretty sure CiscoNZ have heard of firewall et all. He's commenting exactly on people who do not pay attention to the risks of not actively monitoring security and implementing correct rules. He didn't say anywhere he runs things without those risk mitigation features/tools.

If you don't want a full pbx i would recomend a spa2102 from WxC. this will simulate a pots line but be $11.50 per month

vroom: Thanks for that. And what's call quality like? I had a VOIP home phone from Scorch a few years back and I thought it was fine. But the boss will slaughter me if it's not 100%!

Hi vroom, a lot depends on your internet connection because you would be sharing it for both normal usage and VoIP.

All the traffic has to fit through whatever connection you have (or that you decide to buy) and theres options for upgrades if you need it. I would suggest trialling a basic VoIP service that you can use for outbound calls until you are confident that everything will be ok once you switch to the full VoIP service with a hosted PBX. If you plan to use VoIP over ADSL, you can also keep the landline as a backup to use when internet goes down and redirect calls etc. The VoIP provider you choose should ask you what internet connection you have, and whether your router can prioritise the VoIP traffic.

Time to find a new industry!

We are an IT company based in Christchurch who market VoIP business phone systems.

The two things that business owners want is high call quality and reliability. In our experience the internet doesn't deliver on either counts.

For these reasons, we do not use the internet; we use a managed network instead. The client gets all the cost benefits of VoIP plus no additional broadband costs.

Another thing we have learnt is not to try to integrate VoIP with an existing standard phone system as you will end up with the worst of both worlds.

I will disagree with this i have done several installations buy just adding an SPA3102 into analog ports on existing PABX(very old NEC and Panasonic)then changing the hunt group for outward dialing to use voip lines first both customers were wrapped with results.

I have another site with 2 PSTN lines into TDM card running FreePBX 8xCisco 7960 phones and all non cost outbound traffic pushed out through VOIP and so far it has been live 3 years next week. Just checked their VOIP usage and 500-600 minutes a month is the average with no complaints.

I have another site with only 1 PSTN line into TDM card running FreePBX 3xPolycom 601 2xGenric Voip phones & 1 analog. All outbound traffic pushed out through VOIP and PSTN stepped to VOIP on busy so far it has been live 6 months. Just checked their VOIP outbound usage and 900-1000 minutes a month is the average with no complaints.

The only thing that these customers have that could be of some advantage is they are on the Telstra Wellington cable network.

This is only my opinion and that has been created from my personal experience.

The solution above works well on analog trunk ports. I use a PAP2T at home on an old NEC PBX system with no problems. Where you do get problems is when you try a ISDN to IP converter box. I have seen few of these installs go bad
