portunus:  It would impose far more of a cost on the country to throw away working equipment and replace it before the end of it's useful life.

Agreed.  I hate throwing out anything.  I even more hate throwing out something that still does that it was originally intended to do and works just fine.

But the old gear needs to go, and so do the old standards that go with it.  SS7 has had it's day and it's time we moved on to more up to date protocols on modern platforms so we can leverage the benefits that the new features can and do deliver.

It's like fax, that needs to go too.  Telex is long since gone, so are telegrams.

DonGould:

By not following standards, and using their market size, Telecom/NEC have imposed cost on New Zealanders.

This is exactly the sort of crap that lead to anti-trust law suits in the US against Microsoft.

So your saying that Telecom NZ back in 1986 when they started putting in the NEC switches  was an imposed cost and  deserves an antitrust investigation?  What  is your solution.  Let any cowboys come in and setup a national network with no interconnect  regards to standards??

There are a lot of things bad with PTC but having a national switch network is not one of them..

Alcatel is their current supplier since 2004 but todate there is nothing much to show for it..

No, I'm not saying any of that.  Perhaps read my other posts, I think I've addressed those questions.

Your not ???, I did and that's exactly how I read it, pretty sure others here are reading it the same way...

But that's it for me on this, the discussion is actually moving in pretty silly direction IMHO and there is no point in flogging this dead horse,

Ya that's totally the right attitude for this space.

While Mav, myself and others clearly don't agree on the issues, I totally respect Mav and others for putting their views out there and welcoming the general discussion.

I know every time I engage Mav I learn something new.  This time it's been more about the NEC issues and history.

I think he's dead right about not wanting an industry just full of cowboys who just set stuff up with hardware at defaults (leaving odd dial tones and line levels that don't match PTC approved equipment).

While I think PTC is just crap, I very much accept it's what we've got right now and I'm very interested in general discussion about where we're currently at, why we're here, where we should be heading and how we're going to get there.

If a discussion forum such as Geekzone isn't for just this sort of debate then I'm all ears where you guys think these conversations should be held!

Hey guys...

So I've read all the pages....

But I just want a simple voip provider that works, cheap, reliable... I probably make about 50 calls a month from my landline...

I have a router which has built in SIP functionality (Thomson TG789vn)

Whose the recommended provider to go with...

Cheers
Scotty

Get a free 2talk account and get your hands dirty with getting it working. If you want something that works out of the box which cause less headaches then buy a VFX certified ATA and sign up with VFX.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

For me, I was with 2talk for 18 months. I enjoyed having an open ATA that I could configure myself and "get my hands dirty".

However, when I finished with this, I wanted something that would just work.

The ATA would not be changed, and suddenly the call waiting would fail. I would despair, and then it would right itself the next week.

I would have days where no calls would be coming in and I wouldn't even know, let alone know why.

VFX means more to me than working out of the box. It means reliability, and genuinely provides a suitable alternative to a fixed line. I can go OpenVFX if I want later if I want to use the second line or set up the syslog.

Thanks Jack, I appreciate the post and this is exactly what we are aiming for in bringing this to market, a genuine option for fixed line replacement.
