Last night TelstraClear opened the doors of our Wellington showroom on Courtenay Place to a clever bunch of New Zealander who together have developed a New Zealand first.

New Zealand's first FREE internet TV Service -- Ziln.co.nz was launched and introduced first to TelstraClear customers.

Using the skills of e-Cast's ingest, store and payout servers and the production smarts of a range of NZ producers and directors from Netside TV, the Ziln team have developed a site that supports content that may not make it to mainstream broadcast platforms and allows content owners to reach audiences who want a range of quality content presented in the best possible way in your home over the internet.  On Cable it will be awesome, but on any TelstraClear broadband product it will work well and mostly without annoying buffering.

Find out more about Ziln here

The site offers variable bitrate streaming from 128kbps to 768kpbs depending on your connection to the internet.  At 128kbps 1 hour of viewing will be approximately 50Mb usage and at 768kbps the usage would be approximately 300Mb per hour viewed. The quality of the presentation is very good.

While TelstraClear is not commercially linked to Ziln, we felt the product too good not to tell our customers. Technically this is leading edge and although the content may not suit all tastes it will likely prove very complimentary to mainstream broadcast and Pay TV services.  This is not about replacing Sky TV, TVNZ or TV3.

Watch out for the eDM and TC newsletter for more information about the First On-Line Film Festival on Ziln, featuring 12 Kiwi films including Goodbye Pork Pie from 4th September.  Clearnet will have a page dedicated to Ziln from late this week.  Ziln is still adding content by the day and the site will only move from Beta to Production at 6pm September 1st.

Enjoy.

A few things:

The technology sounds good. Traffic for TelstraClear users should be zero-rated. And the channel lineup should really get a shakeup...

The service seems like a remotely controlled Tivo.
I suppose that's going to integrate with the IPTV box TelstraClear will sell, right?
But without broadcasting also local national TV, I can just see it as of very limited use.

I don't know that TelstraClear would want to pass up on an easy 330MB (that's a big B for Bytes, Steve. Little b is for bits) per hour of usage. In fact, it's no doubt the exact reason they're vigorously advertising this service.

Looks good, but I really hope you offer the traffic for free.

It seems odd to me that you say you have no commercial links with Ziln. TCL seem to be heavily promoting it, and with your IPTV solution coming up soon, this would either compete with you, or be compatible with your set-top boxes.

looks like more of a promotion for any other TV viewing alternative ... I'm sure SKYHD would be cheaper on a monthly basis and actually has channels worth watching

It would help to get non-rated traffic if their servers weren't hosted at ICONZ...

If T/Clear Zero rate traffic for T/Clear customers, and it takes off, it would be a big drawcard to bring in new customers for T/Clear, with little real expense (traffic not even leaving their network, how much cost does that really have).

I'm liking the content that's up there at the moment, and like that Flash has been selected (for all it's faults, at least it does web video well and cross-platform), sure quality isn't that great, but it's streaming, what do you expect.

I think it's great. As for "replacing Sky TV, TVNZ or TV3", that would only happen if the channels where streamed, like Freeview are on the digital channel.

The viewer is ok, but it's got the "I'm the only one" interface design on there viewer. I mean, then I put view a program fullscreen on my 2nd monitor, the view thinks it's the only program running, so when you click on your main screen to do other stuff, the viewer drops out of Fullscreen mode. *sighs*

Yes have had a look at it, but I'm afriad the cost of Bandwidth turns me off, the same reason I don't watch TVNZ's ondemand either. Make it Zero-rated and I will be interested.

The only way these services are going to work well, is when we start moving towards locally hosted content peered with Free unlimited national traffic. Until that happens, these services will struggle to gain ground and become mainstream with the cost of traffic the way it is.

On big Time that doesn't become an issue....but the video stream quality does. Ziln, TVNZ Ondemand look crap full screen on a 46" screen.

You tube HD however looks passable (look similar quality to Sky Decoder which is less than Freeview satellite)

Absolutly nothing in content here that would make me want me to use this, especially at home with SkyHDi... Gimic value for me only.

If I'm going to watch TV I prefer it away from the PC

Thats one flaw of using Flash Video. TVNZ, TV3, ZILN, all seem to run with it, which is annoying for those with dual monitors (or a laptop connected to a 29" CRT TV). Its annoying as you end up using about an 1/8th of the screen on the TV if you want to use your computer for other things.
