Problem with laptop is my Win 7 Sys Restore and Vol Shadow Copy are both off and I simply cannot get them to work. Please any ideas, have tried safe mode reboot and discovered sys restore has not worked for 2 years clearly because I use the laptop so infrequently I had not realized it was that long. Can't find an OS disk which I assume would have come with the maching!

Anything in event log? after you try to start the services manually?

[Edit: most machines these days come with a hidden (or not) partition which has the operating system files - instead of a restore disk]

what error do you get when you try to turn the system restore on?

Hu? did i do that?
16Mb (EDO RAM), K6-II processor, 2Mb of onboard graphics. 32k dial up modem. 12 speed CD ROM. 5¼-inch floppy drive. 500Mb HDD.

The restore partition is usually activated at boot time - either you press ESC or a function key to get to the boot menu and select it.

It's a good idea to ALWAYS create a set of recovery DVD or USB key from this partition, in case you need to replace the HDD. There is a program in the Start Menu or in Control Panel (depending on manufacturer) for this.

It's also a good idea to have backup of your data because if you do have to perform a restore, most of the time it completely erases the HDD before restoring it to factory settings.

if its a laptop, mash f8 on startup, go to repair windows normally you will see somthing in there like toshiba image recovery, be aware if you run such a program back up first or you will most likly looz everything it should be a last resort

oh yes what antiviurs are you running i have seen AVG do this thanks
