I recently encountered a problem when turning on my computer.

1st time through - I turn on my computer, the ASUS screen appears (as usual) and then the screen goes black while the monitor's LED flashes. After this happens I am forced to press the reset button.

2nd time through (after reset) - This time I get the screen "Sorry for the inconvenience..blah blah...a recent hardware software change may have caused this"...and so on. I am able to select the "Last Known Working Config" option and everything seems fine from there.

I find this process very annoying since I have to go through it everything I turn on my computer. Replies would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Pokherface,

This is caused by one of 2 things:

1)  Faulty motherboard / CPU / RAM
OR:
2)  Faulty video card

From your description, it sounds like the system is crashing before Windows starts loading, and that can only be caused by one of the two possibilities above.

From possibility (1), it is far more likely to be the motherboard than either of the others.  In 20 years, I could count on one hand the number of faulty CPUs I ever had.  RAM is usually pretty good these days too.  My favourite brand is Kingston, it is just the best.  Out of many hundreds sold, I never had a faulty one.  It was not always like this with other brands we used previously.

So, to summarise:

a)  Try a different video card
If that doesn't fix it:
b)  Try a different RAM module
If that still doesn't fix it, you are most likely up for:
c)  A new motherboard
Or, very unlikely:
d)  A new CPU

I hope that helps,

Cheers,
Grant.
